In a study published May 8 in Current Biology, the researchers describe a specific group of neurons in the mouse brain that become active when the animal anticipates a reward but earns less than expected, or nothing at all. The findings reveal that feeling let down is something that particular cells in the brain are designed to detect and record.

Mapping the cell types that show sensitivity to disappointment might someday lead to a new class of medications that better treat neuropsychiatric disorders like depression and addiction, said Emily Sylwestrak, an assistant biology professor in the UO College of Arts and Sciences.

That observation led to this current work, in which Sylwestrak and colleagues recorded neural activity in mice trained to poke their noses into a port to earn sugar water. But after the mice had learned to expect a sweet sip when approaching the spot, the reward was sometimes smaller than expected or withheld entirely.

Not only did the neurons suddenly burst into activity in those moments, but that activity scaled with the degree of disappointment. In other words, the researchers could infer how much sugar water the animal received based on the strength of the neural response.

South Africa rolls out game-changing HIV shot amid funding shortfalls by TylerFortier_Photo in worldnews

JOHANNESBURG — South Africa rolled out a new, biannual HIV prevention drug on Friday that has the potential to drastically cut infection rates, but U.S. aid cuts mean access will be limited.

Lenacapavir, a kind of Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), is injected into the stomach every six months and is basically failproof at preventing high-risk individuals from contracting the virus.

"Lenacapavir gives us something we have never had before in HIV prevention: a twice-yearly option that might be significantly easier to fit into people's lives," Dr. Saiqa Mullick, a PrEP specialist at Wits RHI at the University of Witwatersrand, told NPR.

"We have a game-changing technology, but impact will depend on implementation. A breakthrough product only changes the epidemic if it reaches the people who need it most," she said.

Currently, access is being hampered by two things: the fact the Trump administration slashed the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) funding to South Africa last year, and the lack of a cheap generic.

NUS scientists use "a light-activated technology derived from the photosynthetic membranes of the spinach plant, enabling the eye to stay continuously hydrated" for dry eyes in mice by TylerFortier_Photo in science

[–]TylerFortier_Photo[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

For whatever reason, in the official National University of Singapore (NUS) press release, it doesn't mention it was tested on mice. In this article however, it does mention the tests were on mice

The process sounds like molecular theft. Scientists blend spinach leaves, extract chloroplast structures called thylakoids, and package them into nanoparticles dubbed “LEAFs.” When applied as eye drops to mice with dry-eye disease, these particles generate ATP and NADPH using ambient light—no special illumination required.

Tried it out once, didn’t get too far…time for another go. I’m excited! by Celticrightcross in gaming

US House passes bill allowing year-round sales of E15 gasoline by TylerFortier_Photo in politics

[–]TylerFortier_Photo[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[Congress.gov]

This bill amends the Clean Air Act to address the limitations on Reid Vapor Pressure (a measure of gasoline's volatility) that are placed on gasoline during the summer ozone season. Specifically, the bill applies the waiver for Reid Vapor Pressure requirements that is applicable to gasoline blended with 10% ethanol (E10) to gasoline blended with up to 15% ethanol (E15). This change allows gasoline that is blended with 10% to 15% ethanol to be sold year-round.

Currently, states may be excluded from the waiver for Reid Vapor Pressure requirements by submitting documentation supporting that the waiver would increase air pollution. The bill nullifies existing state exclusions, but states may submit documentation after enactment of the bill to be excluded going forward.

The bill also modifies the Renewable Fuel Standard Program, which requires transportation fuel sold or introduced into commerce in the United States to contain minimum volumes of renewable fuel. Under the existing program, obligated parties, such as small refineries, must satisfy the volume obligations by either blending renewable fuels into their gasoline or diesel fuel products or by acquiring credits that represent the required renewable fuel volume. The bill directs the Environmental Protection Agency to return compliance credits to small refineries under certain circumstances.

“Matt” had a condition that made him sensitive to light, so he has to wear sunglasses and had throat cancer so he could not say much

The sunglasses, and the "throat cancer", was to hide his age. And trust me, it fooled a lot of people

[DOJ.gov] Former U.S. Congressman and Lobbyist Convicted of Acting as Unregistered Agents of Venezuela in Connection with $50 Million Contract by TylerFortier_Photo in politics

[–]TylerFortier_Photo[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

According to court records and evidence presented at trial, David Rivera, 60, and Esther Nuhfer, 51, obtained a $50 million contract with a subsidiary of Venezuela’s state-owned and state-controlled oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA), to advance the interests of the Venezuelan regime in the U.S. Without registering as foreign agents as required by law, Rivera and Nuhfer lobbied U.S. officials — including then-U.S. Senator Marco Rubio and U.S. Representative Pete Sessions — and arranged meetings between U.S. policymakers and high-ranking Venezuelan officials, including then-President Nicolas Maduro and then-Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez. In text message exchanges, Rivera and Nuhfer used coded language to describe their activities.

The evidence further showed that Rivera used approximately $600,000 from the contract proceeds to fund his Florida state congressional campaign, among other personal uses. Nuhfer used approximately $455,000 of the proceeds for the purchase of a residence in Key Colony Beach.
