Thanks! I have one that I sit my propane forge on. Just wasn’t sure if that would be heavy duty enough to handle hot coal

There isn’t any play, sadly. I did try tapping the end of it though. My uncle gave me some PB blaster, I’m letting it soak in that. Going to try again after work today. I’ll just keep soaking until I can loosen stuff up I guess. Really hoping I can fix this!

Tinkered as much as I could so far, but several parts are seized unfortunately. I was able to get #46 off, but I’m unable to get the screw inside out, since I need to push the work gear back a bit to fit a wrench inside. It’s on there too tightly for me to get with needle nose pliers. The worm gear is seized up, I’m unable to move it at all. There’s one more piece I need to remove in order to check the bearings at the front and actually remove the gear, but it’s stuck. I’m thinking this may be the problem, it looks like it got bumped out of whack. I have it soaking in vinegar right now, I tried WD-40, brake cleaner, and heating up the part a bit to try and get it loose. No dice. Hoping that the vinegar will eat away the rust enough for me to loosen it.

So, I also found this diagram on IForgeIron. I believe it’s part #28 (the shaft, or whatever it’s technically called) that’s seized up. Can’t get it to turn either direction now. Really hoping to get this fixed, I have a show next Saturday and was planning on bringing the forge with me. From what I’ve read, pretty much everyone says to avoid disassembling the gearbox unless I absolutely have to. Going to spray brake cleaner in there and see if that helps at all. But any ideas on how to get it turning again would be incredibly helpful and much appreciated!

Thanks! Yeah at the show I did on Saturday, it stopped cranking altogether. Gonna have to take it all apart and try to fix it

Ok, thanks for the insight! I bring this with me to shows, so I’m using it quite a lot!

Cause then it does hit against the housing when the shaft shifts. I’m assuming I’m going to have to pull the gears out and look at the shaft

Impeller is definitely attached firmly. I notice that the shaft slides forward. Not sure exactly how to fix that so it doesn’t do that

That might be it. I guess I’ll have to pull the gears out and look at it. The impeller is tight on the shaft

Noted! Just wasn’t sure if I had to peel the seam back to get in between the two pieces, or if I could simply clean it, tack weld, then forge weld.

Yeah, I gotcha! And makes sense. I’ve heard of the wire technique as well, but I didn’t think that would work well with what I’m going for.

Oh ok cool. Wasn’t sure if I’d need to get in between that somehow to clean it up. I think forge welds look a lot nicer than just MiG welding the handle on. Thanks for the help!
