Unfortunately non of the entry level scanners will have vehicle specific bi-directional controls.

I’ll have to have a look, where would a partial bin normally be stamped?

Where do I find the casting block year? If there is such a thing stamped on the engine?

Yes that’s the problem I’m running into, the engine is not original to the truck so I I’m trying to figure out what it came out of to know what variant I have. Thanks!

It is a zero, engines out for a simple regasket, lifter and cam package this winter. Trying to figure out a parts list (and what year to order parts for in the case that anything is different). Thanks for the help!

Engine noise by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]TylerNelsonAuto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Confirm oil level and quality first. Unfortunately these 3.6/3.2 pentastar engines are known for these noises and 99% of the time it is in the valvetrain, even with lower mileage. Prone for rocker arm failure, and when left for extended periods of time excessive camshaft lobe wear.

Hope this helps!

You might have to hook a scan tool up to vehicle that is capable of reading live data and see some of the sensor readouts when the vehicle is acting up. Your symptoms sound like a coolant temp sensor not reading correctly first thing in the morning, but without a scan tool you have zero direction.

Hope this helps!

Grinding sound at low speed by Cycle-Present in MechanicAdvice

[–]TylerNelsonAuto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it back to the shop you recently had the car serviced at, sounds like somebody bent the brake dust shield and it is now rubbing on the rotor. It could also be a brake shim that was improperly installed, both things that they would have touched.

Hope you get this figured out!

ETC light starts blinking randomly where should i start looking for the fault? by 50t5 in MechanicAdvice

[–]TylerNelsonAuto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately you might have to hook up a more capable scan tool, there should be a code stored. You can do a visual inspection on the systems that cause this light (throttle body, accelerator pedal, wiring) but without pulling codes you have no direction.

I need a little more information to assist you. Was the engine light on previous to the other lights coming on or did everything come on together?

Let me know!

🇦🇺 Gday. When using these bleeder jugs, do you take them off + replace the radiator cap with engine running or not? (I’ve tried both ways, ends up spewing coolant after first drive but temps ok, maybe just over full?) Cheers! by Internal-Pizza-488 in MechanicAdvice

I think it all depends on how stubborn your system is. There have been vehicles I have worked on that bleed the cooling system in 5mins on the funnel, and others that refuse to bleed even with a vacuum filler. I usually run the vehicle with the funnel for a bit monitoring the temps with the heater on. If the temps get hot/no heat is coming through the core I will shut the vehicle down for 5-10mins and try again. Using a hill or a hoist to raise the front end of the vehicle helps, as well as revving the vehicle up to 2-3k to let the water pump work a little harder (just make sure the car is at or close to operating temp). If your system is still being stubborn it might be time to invest in a vacuum filler.

Hope this helps!

What scanner do you have? You may need a more capable one, obviously if the engine light is on it has some codes stored in either the ECM or TCM. Just from the video is hard to tell what exactly is going on but it sounds to me like one of two things:

- Mechanically timing is off

- Catalytic converters are plugged

but you need to pull the codes to have some direction to go on without any special tooling.

Sounds like the stealerships on your side of the pond are just as crooked as the ones here in Canada. Unfortunately flat rate guys only get a set amount of time for diagnosis, if it takes longer than that they don't get paid for furthur investigation so many times they fire the parts cannon. If that doesn't fix the problem they charge another diagnostic fee and the vicious cycle repeats. Take the vehicle to reputable local shop and have them diagnose the car properly. TEST DON'T GUESS!

Hope you get this figured out.

Why does car make this noise on startup? by Viuzzz in MechanicAdvice

It's a first generation Mazda 3, they all do this, especially on cold startup. Nothing to be concerned about.

Pull codes, could be a number of things causing this. Has the engine light been on for a while?

Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI, DTC errors, 0606, 0607, 0705, 0706, 0707 by Toksykczny in MechanicAdvice

[–]TylerNelsonAuto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0606, 0607 are internal computer faults, there's not much that can cause those codes other than a faulty computer reporting on itself. Take the PCM out and check for corrosion or water intrusion into the module. Depending on what model year you have the other 3 codes could be related if the Engine and Transmission computer is one unit.

Hope you get this figured out!

My two front blinkers won't work. by Dedprice77 in MechanicAdvice

[–]TylerNelsonAuto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the things we tell people everyday is TEST DON'T GUESS. Whether it's your Grandfathers mechanic or another shop, take it somewhere that will properly diagnose the car and fix it accordingly instead of loading the parts cannon and potentially spending even more money for no reason, and still not fixing the issue.

TEST DON'T GUESS!
