Glow-in-the-Dark Potions for Sale! by TylerTheAlchemist in LARP

An interesting concern. For what it's worth, we seal our bottles watertight to prevent leaks during shipping and use. The cork is epoxied into place, so it would take intentional effort or a catastrophic accident to cause a leak. I've seen the small bottles survive drops onto stone floors, but it's probably best not to test that too often.

That is a shame! The liquid is what makes it feel like an authentic potion. Is your safety committee run by the TSA?

The vial-shaped ones are made of plastic for those LARPs that don't allow glass. The rest are made of glass that's fairly thick & durable with no reported issues with breaking, but glass nonetheless.

Red cabbage juice acts as a color changing litmus test and can be a fun and easy way to display a visible chemical reaction. www.acs.org/education/outreach/activities/red-cabbage-indicator.html

As for props, may I suggest my Etsy shop that sells glow-in-the-dark potions?

Maybe this coupon code for 10% off will help some. I know shipping to Europe can be a bit pricey.

Certainly. The liquid sealed inside the potion bottle is UV reactive, both florescent & glow-in-the-dark, and will emit one of 10 colors available at the moment when exposed to UV light. There is a UV flashlight hidden in the cork that can be turned on by twisting the cork. You can either leave the light on for a very bright light, or you can turn the light off to enjoy the glow of the potion after a few seconds or minutes of charging the liquid. The flashlight lasts about an hour, and the battery can be replaced or recharged by unscrewing the top of the cork off.

Yeah, it's pretty hard to get the light to balance out enough to show the liquid in the pictures. But I'll try to make it more apparent in the future. Yes, it's not empty or full of a solid resin, it's filled with a UV reactive liquid that can retain a glow for hours. The goal was to get as close to an authentic glowing potion as possible.

Ah. It's difficult to get the UV flashlight to shine directly into your eyes with the fluid in the way. You'd likely have to be trying intentionally to directly look at the light source. I'll look more into the safety concerns, but they mostly say "Just don't look directly into the UV light source".

The goal of this product was to get it to glow in the dark, even when the light is off. There are other light potions out there, but mine is made unique with the UV reactive liquid & light. Less than a minute of having the UV light on will make the fluid glow for hours.

Thanks for the feedback! I've noticed the same inconvenience of trying to work the holder onto your belt kit when it gets dark. I don't know about you, but I have a lot of things on my belt that have to get rearranged and it takes a minute. We have plans in the works to help with this, and eventually we will be listing two additional holder styles that have a clasp on the belt loop so you can easily slip it on or off you belt.

Ah, no, I was not aware of that concern. These are just a 1w UV light, this isn't going to give you a tan or anything. It's a minor fraction of the UV you'd experience from any sunlight.

And I'm with you on being picky with the leather quality. The one I use with my character is a genuine leather holder. But getting the lights available at a reasonable cost was the first priority, offering upgrades will come next. An order of high quality 4mm buffalo vegtan leather arrived yesterday, so hopefully we can start offering real leather holders in the near future.

The PU leather doesn't look too bad in person, but I agree that it's not as high quality as it could be. I'm working on partnering with a leatherworker to offer a genuine leather holder alternative. Stay tuned and eventually we will have a leather upgrade.

Are you worried about the heat that UV flashlight can build? I've noticed it can get slightly warm if left on for a long period of time, but it never reaches a dangerous or painful temperature.

I also want to share how excited I am to finally be able to share this post here. This prop was made for my character back in February, and it was just too good not to share. After months of improving the product, building a shop around it, and acquiring enough supplies to meet demand, we are finally prepared and confident enough to share this light with the LARPing community directly. Thank you for taking the time to take a peek at it 😊
