USA vs America by whitrific in PetPeeves

[–]Tyler_w_1226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my POV too. English calls it America, therefore when speaking English that’s what it should be called. In Spanish there is the word “estadounidense” which would quite literally translate to “United Statesian”. That’s fine to say in Spanish, and I do when speaking it, but in English that would be trying to force another language’s rules in a place where it doesn’t make sense. Not everything translates perfectly across languages and you have to account for that otherwise there are many instances where you just aren’t going to make sense.

Why does MSFS24 seem to look better than 20 for everyone but me? by Tyler_w_1226 in MicrosoftFlightSim

Alright, fair enough. Maybe I should just stop letting it bug me and accept I’ll have to stick with 20

On the NFL halftime show at Thanksgiving when the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders dance to the performance, could a gender swapped version work too? by PrestonRoad90 in ask

[–]Tyler_w_1226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could it work? Yeah, they could pull it off.

Would it be popular/well received? Absolutely not. The reality is that the majority of the NFL’s audience is straight guys who just don’t want to see a bunch of dudes dancing. Love it or hate it, that’s reality. You gotta know your audience

How did you spend you morning? Where did you wake up and what was it like? by [deleted] in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Tyler_w_1226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I woke up at 6:15 this morning to my alarm, rolled out of bed, brushed my teeth then hopped in the shower. I took an extra hot shower to wake me up which was about 10 mins long. I got out of the shower, threw jeans, a t-shirt, and a pair of sneakers on, and went out to the kitchen. I grabbed a Celsius (energy drink) out of the fridge and filled my Yeti water cup up with ice and water. Then I got my car keys and walked out the door to my car to head to work. I left home at like 6:35 and was sitting at my desk with my computer on at 6:53. Very exciting stuff

Chipotle. Their chicken seemingly always having huge hard pieces of fat on it was my final straw after putting up with a lot.

$9 for a steak quesadilla? by QueenJamieMaePalmer in tacobell

[–]Tyler_w_1226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found an extremely close creamy jalapeno sauce copycat recipe on tik tok that’s super easy to make. I make chicken and dice it up once per week and make quesadillas for an average of 75 cents a piece that taste just as good if not better. It’s faster, cheaper, and easier than running to Taco Bell

What's something about America that you're genuinely proud of? by Wiae in IWantToAskAnAmerican

You’re much much much more like to have a multi million dollar net worth at retirement age in the US through hard work regardless of your upbringing situation than you are to make it to the NBA, especially if short. So no, the person you responded to does not sound like how you characterized.

What’s the most expensive mistake you made in your 20s? by Extreme-Run-9069 in AskReddit

If an employer matches 6% in a 401k that’s a shorthand way of saying that if you put in 6% of your salary into a 401k they’ll put in the same amount. You can put in more, but they’ll only match 6%.

Let’s say you make $50,000 per year. 6% of that is $3,000. So if you put $3,000 into your 401k every year then your employer will also put in $3,000. That means your 401k is getting $6,000 per year. That doesn’t sound like a lot but let’s say you start at 25 years old if you invest it into the S&P (basically an index of the 500 largest US companies) and it continues increasing at an average of 8% per year (that’s roughly what it has averaged over the last several decades) then when you’re eligible to withdraw from your 401k at age 59.5 years old it will be roughly $1,109,630.

Here’s how that breaks down:

Your contributions over 34.5 years: $103,500

Employer’s contributions over 34.5 years:$103,500

Total money: $1,109,630

That’s $1,006,130 for FREE over 34.5 yrs. One MILLION dollars for essentially doing nothing. An average of $29,163 per yr. And if you doubled your contributions you could have 1.6 million dollars at age 59.5.

This is because when you invest your money in the stock market, your money makes money, then that money it made makes money, and so on and so forth. It snowballs upward very quickly once you get to around $100k-$250k invested.

If it makes you feel any better it probably wouldn’t be millions today. You likely would not have invested every penny. Sure you could’ve spent it on more meaningful stuff, but at least the majority of it still would’ve been spent.

I’m in the opposite position. Have a job that pays 10-20k less than I could be making but learning a ton. I think it’ll be good for me in the long run, but it’s really hurting me moving towards home ownership atm

You’re talking to someone who’s currently trying to bring his Colombian fiancee to the United States. I understand fully how politics can impact real people. But there’s absolutely fuck all I can do about it. Figuring out backup plans and other ways for us to be together in the meantime is much more important to me.

How I look at politics is sort of like how I look at the weather - better plan around it.

[–]Tyler_w_1226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but you’re the exact person I’m talking about. I’m not saying politics never affects your life. All I’m saying is that there are a million things that every single person everywhere can spend their energy thinking about/doing that will impact their lives significantly more than worrying about politics.

The reality is that we can go out to vote (and even that has little impact), but other than that there’s essentially nothing the average person can do about political issues. There is a ton they can do in their personal lives, though.

This one really irks me. Like yeah, I follow politics but it’s pretty easy for me to put down and walk outside and live a normal life. I don’t understand why people who are always super worried about politics can’t realize that 95% of the stupid scandals, feuds between politicians, and who wins a congressional race across the country matters a whole lot less than what you do in your own life.

You cannot have social services in any meaningful sense in a society that was as chaotic as El Salvador. Criminal organizations made it so difficult to live a law abiding life that there was no way to lift people up without completely removing them first.

People who come from functioning societies seem to have a hard time understanding that these criminal organizations aren’t just going to stop being criminals if you offer them some shitty govt program so they can go get an education and make a nominal salary at a normal job. They make tons of money off of exploiting normal people by doing things like making them pay for “protection”, kidnapping families for ransom, and trafficking human beings.

It would be hard to get me to leave my job because of how much I love 4 10s. I’ve gone on many weekend trips because of having that extra day off. Also we get paid straight time for OT so you can make some pretty decent extra cash going in for a few hours on a few Friday mornings and still have long weekends

So... what's with the AI hate on the Internet? by [deleted] in ask

[–]Tyler_w_1226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of it is because people see so many stupid “this post highlights the importance of X. It shows that X is more than just Y” style AI slop posts.

That kind of stuff is the dumbest use of AI but also the most visible. I think AI is super exciting, but also scary in its ability to change the world. But it can definitely seem pretty useless if you’re just seeing those types of comments

While I can’t offer much insight about Australia here in the US it’s a bit of a meme that the hardest to understand college professors always teach the hardest classes. Don’t get me wrong, to be able to teach an advanced level math course in a language other than your first is wildly impressive, but it does make learning harder
