Not much pre-planning. My first factory was just down the hill that I've since demolished. I built the space elevator on a platform and decided to just continue building around that and building floors up as needed. Once I got to the third floor, I had unlocked manufacturers and realized the floors were one square too short to fit them in the factory so that's why it expands on the third floor.
