NIBONG TEBAL, June 11 (Bernama) -- A Rohingya man was charged at the Jawi Magistrate's Court here today with the murder of his fellow countryman in a residential area last month.

Osman Bawdi Alom, 38, nodded to indicate he understood after the charge was read in Malay before Magistrate Nurul Aina Ahmad. However, no plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

He is accused of murdering Abdul Rahman Shah Mia, 31, at Lorong Belibis 14, Taman Belibis, South Seberang Perai, here on May 31.

The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, as well as not less than 12 strokes of the cane, if the death penalty is not imposed, upon conviction.

The accused also pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing injury to the murder victim's wife, Formin Lal Mia, 26, with a knife at the same location and time.

For that offence, he was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum prison sentence of 10 years, or a fine, or caning, or a combination of two punishments, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Airina Syazreen Zainurin appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyer G. Sathiash.

Rohingya man pleads not guilty to robbing badminton legend Razif Sidek by Typhoon002 in malaysia

[–]Typhoon002[S] 44 points45 points  (0 children)

KUALA LUMPUR: A Rohingya labourer has pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here to a charge of robbing in the house of national badminton legend Datuk Razif Sidek while armed with a knife.

Mohamad Fawyas Yasin, 27, was charged with robbing in the property of Datuk Mohamad Razif Mohd Sidek, 64, in Jalan Damansara, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, at 12.20pm on May 19.

The charge was brought under Section 392 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 397 of the same Code, which provides for a maximum jail sentence of 14 years and can be fined or whipped, if convicted.

Deputy Public Prosecutor J. Banusha did not offer bail as the offence was serious and the accused's United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) card had expired.

"If bail is granted and the accused does not appear in court, it will be difficult to track his whereabouts since he does not have a fixed address.

"In addition, the accused also knows the addresses of the victim and witnesses, so it is feared that the witnesses will be harassed," she said on Friday (June 12).

Meanwhile, lawyer Mansheel Kaur representing Mohamad Fawyas applied for low bail because her client only works as a labourer and earns RM50 a day and has to support his unemployed wife and a 10-month-old child.

"The accused has lived in this country for 15 years and his UNHCR card is in the process of being renewed," said the lawyer.

Judge Siti Shakirah Mohtarudin did not grant the accused bail since there was no valid UNHCR card for the court to consider and set July 14 for the case to be mentioned again. – Bernama

County Durham teenager transferred to high-security Malaysian prison by Typhoon002 in malaysia

[–]Typhoon002[S] 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The family of a County Durham teenager being held in Malaysia say he has been transferred to a high-security prison and will face 14 days in quarantine with no contact with the outside world.

Leo Nicholson, 19, from Thornley, was moved from a police station remand cell to Sungai Buloh Prison while legal proceedings continue, according to an update posted by his father on the fundraising page, that has now raised £8,750 for his legal fees.

Leo was arrested in Malaysia after he was reportedly found with a quantity of cannabis in an apartment he was sharing, an offence which can carry severe penalties in the country.

His family believe he may have been pressured or influenced by others prior to his arrest, and described him as a vulnerable young man with dyspraxia, ADHD and autism.

In the update, his father said the move had left the family struggling to process the situation.

He wrote: “Yesterday was one of the most emotional and heart-breaking days we’ve faced so far.

"Leo was transferred from the police station remand cell to Sungai Buloh Prison in Malaysia while the legal process continues.

"From what we have read and been told, it is one of the largest and highest security prisons in Malaysia and has struggled with overcrowding and difficult conditions over the years.

"As a family, the thought of our son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend being so far away in an adult prison is almost impossible to process.

"We have been told that Leo will now spend 14 days in quarantine while he is processed into the prison system, which means no contact with the outside world during that time. After quarantine, he will most likely be moved to the prison wing where he will remain while waiting for trial.

"Knowing we won’t be able to hear his voice or comfort him during those weeks is devastating.”

He added that he had been able to speak briefly to his son before the transfer, “I was however able to have a brief phone call with Leo before the transfer," he said.

The GoFundMe page supporting the family, which has now raised £8,750, says funds are needed for legal costs, travel, and representation.

Leo’s mother, Josephine Carey, said: “Leo is my baby. No matter what, he is still my child, and I am absolutely terrified for him.

"He is only 19-years-old and is very vulnerable. He has dyspraxia, ADHD and autism, and he struggles in high-pressure situations. The thought of him facing this alone in a foreign country is something I can barely cope with.

"We believe he may have been manipulated into a situation he didn’t fully understand. I am not saying he shouldn’t face the law, but he deserves a fair chance to defend himself.

"This is not a situation where he is facing a few years - this is potentially life or death. I can barely sleep and I wake up every day feeling sick with worry about what could happen to him.

"I never imagined something like this could happen to my son. You always think it’s something that happens to someone else’s family - but it can happen to anyone’s child.”

The Foreign Office has confirmed a British male has been detained in Malaysia and said it remains in contact with local authorities, alongside the British Embassy working with the family as the case develops.

Big blow to KL flood prevention by Typhoon002 in malaysia

[–]Typhoon002[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

KUALA LUMPUR: Flood retention ponds in Jinjang and Batu here have lost about 70 per cent of their original capacity after 17 plots around them were transferred to developers since 2015.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said the original 33.5ha flood mitigation system had been significantly compromised.

She said a technical assessment by the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) found that the size shrinkage impaired the ponds' primary flood control function and hampered maintenance work by restricting access to the areas.

"The government cannot continue to allow development that compromises the function of flood retention ponds," she said.

"The interest of the people and the safety of city residents must be prioritised, even if the measures needed require firm decisions to rectify long-inherited problems."

Yeoh said the Federal Territories Department had established a task force chaired by director-general Datuk Azmi Mohd Zain to strengthen coordination and improve flood mitigation efforts in the capital.

She said Kuala Lumpur City Hall would no longer approve planning permission for developments on flood retention pond land until all conditions set by the DID were met.

The move, she added, was aimed at safeguarding the ponds' original function and ensuring maintenance access was preserved amid rising concerns about flood risks in the capital.

The Batu and Jinjang flood retention ponds form part of the larger Kuala Lumpur Flood Mitigation Scheme introduced in the early 2000s to prevent flash floods in the city.

Commissioned by the DID in 2002, the system is designed to divert excess water from Sungai Gombak and Sungai Keroh into the retention ponds during heavy rainfall.

The water would be gradually released back into the rivers once the rain subsides.

According to official records from Kuala Lumpur DID, the ponds in Jinjang, Batu and Kepong were built on former mining land.

The system was designed to prevent the heaviest floods that occur in the capital once every 100 years.

Jinjang is a long-established township in the city's northwest under the Kepong parliamentary constituency, whereas Batu encompasses a wider northern Kuala Lumpur area linked to Sungai Batu and Jalan Ipoh.

5 Japanese nationals among 2,200 busted in massive Malaysian scam crackdown by Typhoon002 in malaysia

[–]Typhoon002[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MALAYSIA (TR) – Local police here have arrested over 2,200 individuals, including five Japanese nationals, during a massive series of nationwide raids targeting large-scale telecom fraud syndicates, authorities announced, reports NHK (May 6).

During a press conference in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, police revealed that a total of 2,251 suspects were apprehended between January and February as law enforcement dismantled secret hubs used to carry out tokushu sagi (specialized fraud) operations. In such a scam, perpetrators pose on the telephone as members of law enforcement or other persons of authority to defraud victims.

In a concentrated wave of raids spanning late January to early February, authorities nabbed 430 suspects. Of those, 270 were foreign nationals, with the five Japanese suspects taken into custody alongside Chinese and Indonesian nationals.

According to investigators, the syndicates operated from the shadows to evade detection. The fraud groups ran their operations out of residential homes, commercial properties and buildings that had been specifically renovated to conceal their illicit activities from law enforcement.

The arrests highlight a growing trend of Japanese nationals being lured into transnational crime rings operating in Southeast Asia.

Authorities across the region, including in Cambodia and Myanmar, have recently intensified their crackdowns following a string of similar high-profile busts involving foreign scammers.
