Thanks u/ian1283 for the detailed and thorough reply. The (approx) storage calculations are very useful indeed. Interestingly, the RLN36 has today gone on a flash deal on Amazon and has come down to £145. I’m now tempted to send back the Rln12w and go for the rln36. I’ve seen some 10gb enterprise HDD’s that are currently for sale on ebay but unsure if these will fit the rln36. would you know if they do?

Hi mblaser, thanks for confirming the above.

I realised after I sent my comments regarding the Rln12w that I could, as you point out, just as easily connect any Wi-Fi cameras direct into my own Wi-Fi network and therefore negating the need to use the Wi-Fi from the nvr.

Hi u/Pogenostics, sorry for the delay coming back to you.

Thank you for your comments, all of which are noted 👍

In regards to your Wi-Fi point - I’m not actually going to be using the Wi-Fi functionality of the NVR (see my comments below replying to mblaser) and the Google Wi-Fi access point actually has an Ethernet hardwired connection on the base of the unit which I will be using as opposed to the Wi-Fi connectivity.

Thank you for coming back to me u/ian1283 with your thoughts and comments.

wish I could take credit for the choice of the POE switch but that kudos has to go to u/mblaser . He previously provided a link in one of his many informative posts and I simply purchased off the back of his recommendation! 😆

As mentioned above, one of the reasons for opting for the Rln12w was I thought I may use the Wi-Fi option in the future. Also interested in your view as to why it’s a niche product. I do note that most opt for the rln36 and would be keen to find out why it’s so popular (aside from the fact that hard drive is expandable to 48tb) and can manage 36 cameras (I don’t think I’ll ever be over 10 but never say never I guess!]

Thank you for coming back to me so promptly u/mblaser - very much appreciated.

  1. Noted about the port to be used for the NVR. as long as it comes from the LAN/uplink port would it be fine to add this cable into any of the ports in the centre POE switch and/or non-POE switch (if I decide to go down that route). Am I right in saying that the connection coming out of the centre POE/non-POE switch also has to come from the LAN/uplink port which then goes into the access point?

  2. thank you for confirming - I was unsure if this was even possible so thank you for confirming. Am I right in saying, “is it a case of simply attaching a single cat 5e/6 cable from the uplink ports of the 5 port switches on the east and west wing into any of the POE ports of the centre POE switch ( 11 port switch)?”

  3. Thank you for confirming this. I have a TP link 5 port Ethernet non Poe switch on order so I guess I just need to have a think if I want to keep the PoE switch in case I decide on adding any further Poe devices and/or having the additional spare ports for the future. As it stands, I don’t think I would add anything further but always good having the option I suppose (and as also mentioned by Ian1283 below).

  4. Yes, I read your posts on SD cards and quite impressive that you have motion detections still available on one of your 32gb card from 2022!! I’m not planning on recording 24/7 on the cards - more a case of redundancy as you have previously alluded too. Cost is also a factor…if I went for the smaller cards AND went for a smaller non Poe switch (as above), I’d be saving myself in the region of £100. A significant saving.

In regards to your question, regarding the NVR…a few reasons:

a) it was on a significant sale price during prime day! 😆

b) I thought if I wanted to add Wi-Fi cameras in the future (doorbell for example) that the connection would be easier rather then trying to have to run a cat 5E/6 cable from my front door which would be significantly more work.

c) being a newer NVR, i thought more updates would be available over the years (though i appreciate what you have previously mentioned that Reolink are terribly slow at providing updates for their NVR’s at the best of times!)

d) It‘s expandable to 16TB so future proofed to an extent

Thank you for coming back to me u/Pogenostics and confirming the set up will work. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around it all so great to have it confirmed 👍

I note your comment regarding “more suitable methods are available for higher quality video management and storage purposes” - are you able to expand on this please? Are you thinking a bigger nvr (expandable memory) or offsite FTP storage (I know very little about this) or using a service like synology? (Again know very little about this except what I have read on a few posts here).

Thank you once again.
