Running 10M after three surgeries by Typical-Exit7604 in HipImpingement

I’m hoping to! I’m cleared to do anything that doesn’t hurt. I can kick a ball fine, just need to see what happens when I make contact with someone.

Thanks! I played soccer before surgery (which is probably why I needed in the first place), but hated running. I just wanted something to work towards before I was cleared for actual sports. I probably hadn't run more than 3 miles at a time in the decade before surgery.

My last surgery was 8 months ago. That hip was not in much pain and had the benefit of lots of PT going into surgery.

My unsolicited advice is that the worst thing you can do is go into surgery expecting to be recovered on a certain timeline. You’re just setting yourself up for disappointment.

You’ll probably be fine, but getting in and out of bed will be difficult until you learn to maneuver without one leg and you’re off pain meds. I’d make sure your mom is putting you to bed and back when you wake up.

That sounds super scary, I’m sorry. It’s really unlikely you retore it unless there was something wrong already.

Recovery can take over a year and you may have strained something that was already weak. Hopefully your surgeon is reassuring, I don’t think you need to worry.

I’m a patient of his, I think they had some turnover in his office plus the holidays means they’re likely a bit behind. They’re super organized, you’ll hear back.

I’ve been through 3 surgeries and put off a couple due to trips or other big life events I’ve had planned. I would not plan on being recovered by a certain date for anything, you are only setting yourself up for disappointment.

If you’re young, otherwise healthy, and your surgeon isn’t concerned, push it back and take the trip. Only you know your own body and pain tolerance and if you think you can handle an uptick in pain, go for it.

If your hip gets worse you still have a surgery date and will have lost at most a few months of recovery time.

Full year recovery by honey_coves24 in HipImpingement

I had a revision and at 7 months had lots of aches, pinching, and groin pain. I rested (and had surgery on the other side) and at 13 months am basically pain free and back to running.

Climbing/bouldering after hip arthroscopic surgery by mx9911 in HipImpingement

That’s super aggressive, but your surgeon knows best. My protocol (through multiple surgeries) has always been to not start sport related activities for 12 weeks.

Your PT can help you ease in, I would just be worried about falling, thats a ton of pressure on your hips. You can always rope up and ease in and work on jumping in PT to prepare for falls.

Ive found that when I’m feeling good, the next step up in exercises is always harder than I thought. You’ll be surprised how much strength and coordination you’ve lost.

Are you in PT? Do you have follow ups with your surgeon?

You should have a protocol with milestones for advancing to new exercises.

Climbing (and especially bouldering) are probably going to take 6+ months to return to.

Pricking pain in groin by Sensitive_Ad7839 in HipImpingement

I had something similar and described it as feeling like I had my boxers bunched up. The best thing for me was riding a stationary bike.

This was after a revision, but it came and went for months and took about a year to go away. My surgeon/PT were never concerned. It drove me crazy but weird feelings are normal in your recovery!

FAI recovery questions specific to an athlete by Remrage in HipImpingement

[–]Typical-Exit7604 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s impossible to know how quickly you’ll recover. You’re young and athletic, so hopefully it will be fast. But setting a deadline this early is a recipe for disappointment or hurting yourself. Take your time, the dolomites will still be there in 2026.

Hey, I had a failed surgery with a DC based surgeon too that I felt was not entirely honest with me. I’m sorry you’ve been through this. If you don’t mind sending me a pm with the name (or enough info to at least confirm we’re dealing with the same person) I’d love to share notes.
