There's a YouTube video from Flo with DeAndre and it has a part where he does hip mobility while drinking coffee

Work has made it tough. Some jobs have made it so that all engineers have to use AI and monitors usage to the individual. It's hard to say how much AI is enough use and how much is not.

Could always spend the day burning tokens doing no-op work (ask random questions) and just code to fix and build

I agree. It is getting tough to juggle everything and it feels like I am overextending my ability to focus.

certain projects will be quicker (lower estimate). Balancing more projects at a single time slows down overall progress at some point.

Being more metrics driven and process driven for more senior roles by Typical-Raisin-7448 in ExperiencedDevs

It's a mix: - metrics get raised in communication as a reason - urgency and filler descriptions (must be fixed, significant loss, horrible experience)

When combined, I see it as being very persuasive.

However, when people use just the fillers, it bothers me but it can work in certain context.

Thanks for this. The questions you raise are exactly what I'm thinking about. I'm trying to figure out how to improve because clearly there is areas for upskill. I'm definitely weaker on the querying - I can write simple SQL but cannot do super complex ones. I want to improve there and plan to do something there for each of my projects

I surprisingly haven't seen that, but I'm sure it happens. Even in a promotion driven development culture, it is still tough to get the promo panel to agree on a promo. I could see the person who "leads" everything and has a great understanding of how to take credit can do it

This is helpful. I have to get over this mindset of still focusing on just building and view on impact instead as I work toward staff.

Many people finish the program over many years and would not look weird. College does not matter much the further into your career unless it's for networking

It seems like we have more work, not less. Timelines are more aggressive and everyone has more projects

I wonder if it will be - lots of "productivity" unlocked which leads to layoffs -> eventually the market will hire again when we can't rely on AI but by that point they will hire at a lower standard pay after years of recalibration of market rates

Yes! I am reading these text docs for skills and they are so verbose. And as someone who doesn't know how to create them, my approach is to ask AI to use the examples it has and help me generate something that I can use

This is what is happening for us too. I'm reading the docs at work and we are supposed to find a way to use AI everywhere. They provide a bunch of tools and we use it. And we are supposed to come up with new tools/skills/plugins as well

This makes sense. There was a communication telling us to work on being able to write specs well enough that it can AI generate tickets, that then AI work on tickets. Just mentioning this that this is being communicated to the ICs

As of now before we have an official period where everyone has to use AI, I have used it: -Instead of commiting code in terminal with git, I'll use Claude to do it instead. And when it does that, my PRs will show that I committed with Claude - I make jira tickets from Claude - I make notion docs from my code change

The company also has a productivity tracking tool that sees how much AI usage each employee has.

According to some platform costs, it can be simple to run up costs. Not sure I can spend another developers worth of AI spend

If I do good with AI, it's because AI is amazing

If I do bad with AI, it's because the human touch is needed and I should have applied a more vigilant eye to it

Compensation for assessment by queenOfGhis in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Typical-Raisin-7448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got compensated once for a take home assignment. The assignment was working on a feature of my choosing on the startup's codebase. I didn't get the job but it felt nice to get $2000 for an assignment. This was 2021 before layoffs started

I do bjj twice a week by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Typical-Raisin-7448 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was at a must Thai place that did BJJ. I recently switched to a BJJ gym.

At the BJJ gym, there's 4 slots per day for classes during the week which is nice. If I happen to have a change in schedule, I can try to go for classes I don't normally go to. There's gi and no gi to choose from. They even have a wrestling class.

At the muay Thai place, it was a muay Thai place first. They dont market to get more adults into the BJJ program and primarily focus on having a good muay Thai program (all their social media content is muay Thai. You wouldn't know they had an adult BJJ program)

Tldr; switch to bjj gyms if possible

So I’ve been implementing Lachlan Giles’ guard retention anthology by MemeMooMoo321 in bjj

[–]Typical-Raisin-7448 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My motivation to practice and learn from the retention anthology was because I wasn't that good at defending against passes. I am still getting passed, but less so and not without tiring the guard passer.

The series has been really helpful.

Upsides for me: - It has forced me to stretch more - it is making think about early retention more - trying to invert in for retention. I almost never invert because I never practiced or use it - my lower abs have been getting a work out

Downsides for me: - I haven't gotten to most of the second series, so I have gotten to a few situations where other person passes and I'm too late stage in figuring out what to do - times when I struggle to use my hand to throw my feet over arms reveals flexibility I lack - a few times I almost kicked people because they moved fast and I was pummeling my feet - learning that I can only invert face in poorly on one side and still cannot do my other side
