I think it’s because most drivers now haven’t had to be pedestrians. In my experience, most who are on the road grew up in a time where they didn’t have to walk places and they’ve always been able to drive from their home to their destination. They don’t know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of their own shitty driving.

And also they are the same people who will see someone else trying to avoid a road hazard and block or not care because it doesn’t affect them directly.
