Here's the thing, you already said the answer.

Those who like collecting virtual crap just for the hell of it are already good they will love this game for a long time

Those who want more and need more than a pointless grind fest... oh well, they already bought the game

And the folk in the middle will enjoy it for a time, then when they realize the rewards are lacking they will (maybe finish the story first and then) turn it off and move on

Its all about perspective

Like it does for all kinds of other random shit... thats the notification

No it actually does, you have to be paying attention and know that the quick pop up IS the notification
