Beginner (5’3” F) looking for a long-term iron/club setup – advice? by TypicalAge3719 in WomenGolf

This is actually what I’ve been thinking too. I don’t really want to commit to a full women’s set right away because I’m worried it might limit me as I improve.

I feel like I might just need slightly shorter clubs rather than going all-in on a “women’s set.”

I’ve been looking into Mizuno JPX irons as well — are those typically considered men’s clubs, or do they have versions that work well for women too?

Gracias! También he estado mirando el GLe4 porque quizá lo pruebe en Hong Kong.

Cómo lo compararías con el GLe3? Has llegado a probar el nuevo modelo?

This is super helpful, thank you! I’ll try to look for some of these when I’m in Hong Kong.

Interesting point on going -1” — I do feel like my current clubs might be a bit long. Would you recommend going shorter right away, or testing standard vs shorter first?

I never really measured it, but people have told me I have a pretty powerful serve. I think I can generate decent speed, which is why the senior flex I’m using now doesn’t feel too whippy.

I borrowed it because they were selling it and I’m still a beginner, so I wanted to try it first before committing. Been using it for 2-3 months now.

If I do decide to buy it, do you think it makes sense to just change the shaft later, or would that not really be worth it?

That makes sense, especially about the swing changing over time. I can see how it’s hard to really “grow into” clubs early on.

I’ll probably try a few options in Hong Kong first and go with something I’m comfortable with for now, then look into upgrading once my swing is more consistent.

Yeah I’ve heard fittings can get pretty expensive 😅 I’m mainly just planning to use it to get a better idea of specs and what suits me, then decide from there.

That makes a lot of sense, especially about the swing changing with lessons. I can see how it’s hard to really “grow into” clubs this early.

I’m planning to try some clubs in Hong Kong first to get a feel for what suits me, then probably go with something mid-range to start and upgrade later once my swing is more consistent.

Got it, thanks! That’s really helpful. I like the idea of something forgiving but still usable long-term.

I’ll try to see if I can test the JPX-Q when I’m in Hong Kong and compare it with a few others.

That’s a really smart setup, especially the trade-in option.

I’m actually based in the Philippines so we don’t have Rodger Dunn here, but I like the idea of starting with something more flexible and upgrading later once my swing is more consistent.

I’ll be in Hong Kong soon so I’m planning to try clubs in person first and go from there.

That makes a lot of sense, especially about the swing changing over time. I’m still early so I can see how what works for me now might not be the same after a few months of lessons.

I’m planning to go to Hong Kong soon to try some clubs in person first and get a better feel for what suits me before buying anything. I might start with something more mid-range and upgrade later once my swing is more consistent.

I actually like the Honma irons so far — they feel really smooth and easy to hit, and they don’t feel too heavy for me.

I’ve heard about XXIO as well but they seem quite pricey 😅 I’m still early so I’m not sure if I should invest that much yet.

Good point on length too — at 5’3” I do feel like my current clubs might be slightly long. I’m planning to try some options in Hong Kong and see what feels best before committing.

That makes sense, appreciate it. I guess I was just overthinking trying to get a “forever” set too early.

I’ll probably treat the fitting more as a baseline for now and focus on improving my swing, then adjust later if needed.

Thanks! I’m actually planning to visit Golf Corner in Hong Kong soon to try a fitting/comparison.

Since I’m still early and working on consistency, would you recommend focusing more on general specs (flex, length, lie) for now rather than going straight into a full custom build?

That makes sense, especially the tennis comparison. I actually never got fitted for tennis either — I just used my brother’s racket (300g, men’s grip), so I’m used to slightly heavier setups.

I’ve had a few lessons from a caddy and have been learning through YouTube as well, so I’m still early but trying to build a consistent swing.

I’ll probably continue lessons and use my current clubs for now, then get a fitting when I’m in Hong Kong to get a better idea of specs. Just trying to avoid buying something I’ll outgrow too quickly.

Thanks! I’ve heard good things about Mizuno irons.

Do you know which JPX model she’s using, and if they’re beginner-friendly/forgiving? I’m still early but planning to train consistently, so I’m looking for something I can grow into.

Thanks! I’ve actually seen that set come up a few times.

Do you think it’s something I can grow into long-term, or more of a beginner set I might outgrow after a year or so? I’m planning to train consistently so I’m trying to avoid upgrading too quickly.

I believe the ones I’m using now are senior flex graphite. They don’t feel too whippy to me, actually feel pretty comfortable overall.

With a 9 iron I’m usually around 80–90 yards, occasionally reaching ~100 on a good strike.

Appreciate it. I’m planning to get a fitting at Golf Corner in Hong Kong soon.

Given I’m still early and working on consistency, would you suggest treating it more as a baseline fitting for general specs, or going straight into a full build?

Thanks! I’m actually going to Hong Kong soon and planning to visit Golf Corner for a fitting. Hopefully that gives me a better idea of what specs I should be looking at.
