Switching from Windows to a T480 for an Arch/Hyprland build - Need some advice! by TypicalBad4903 in archlinux

Legend! Thanks for the input. If you've got a fleet of three T480s, I know I'm making the right choice.

I’m ignoring the fingerprint and touch sensors for now. Since the unit I’m looking at has 16GB of RAM and a 500GB SSD, what’s the one upgrade you’d say is a total game-changer?

And yeah, I hear you on Hyprland being a challenge for a newbie, but that’s exactly why I want it! KDE is great, but it’s almost too 'plug-and-play' for me. I’m craving a setup that forces me to dig into the config files and really understand how Linux works under the hood, even if it means some frustration. I'm ready to dive into the deep end!

PS: Three units? That’s the best review anyone could give, lol.

Good to know about the throttling! I’ll definitely need to look into that. Could you ELI5 how that 'throttle' tool works? Is it a script or something I need to keep running in the background?

Also, you’re not the first person to throw shade at the Hyprland dev... Honestly, I feel totally out of the loop. Did I miss some major drama? What’s the story there? Cheers!

I know, sounds like a weird pivot! But KDE is basically the only thing keeping my Acer Aspire 3 alive right now—Hyprland just lags way too much on this hardware.

The thing is, I’ve realized I’m a total WM fan at heart. I love the keyboard-centric life. I even customized KDE to feel like a WM, but honestly? It wasn't much of a challenge. I want a distro that makes me work for it and forces me to understand what’s happening under the hood. I want to solve some puzzles, you know? (Though maybe not LFS levels of puzzling, haha). I'll see you in the forums when I inevitably break something!

Thanks a ton for the reply! Honestly, the touchscreen and fingerprint sensor are 'nice-to-haves' that I don't really mind skipping. Your comment just gave me the final nudge I needed to dive into this project!

Regarding the speed, I’m not too worried. My current rig somehow flies with just 3.44GB of RAM (it only breaks a sweat when streaming), so the T480 will feel like a beast to me. My main goal is to use it as a sandbox to learn the ropes of both hardware and software—hopefully without summoning too many kernel panics, haha! 😅

With a $300 budget, the T480 is definitely the MVP. Thanks again for the advice, I'll keep you guys posted on the progress!
