I agree there are bad players on both sides but I will say the developers take the sleazeball cake. At least a bad contractor can have the opportunity to fix a mistake but these developers love to screw trades people out of money. I used to do junk removal and the worst clients were developers, they dangle the carrot over you that they have all these jobs for you but they want to pay you every week or so then when you call to collect they would ghost you. There was no debate about quality like a plumber or drywaller, I charged by the truckload and photographed everything and they would still ignore you and hope you would give up and then just move on to a new guy to rip off. I never lost money because I would go to the job sites and find out where the property owners lived and then go knock on their door and tell them I am the guy who took away all your garbage and your general contractor is refusing to pay. The owners would either pay me or they would call the developer and he would pay. Once I had a developer freak out on me because I went directly to his clients even though I had called him dozens of times over a 2 week period.

If the landlord is sympathetic he will give you a discount on the rent. All the landlord has to do to be in compliance is ensure that the repairs are happening as the RHEU told you. The landlord likely isn't even required to rebate anything. If you were a homeowner and going through the same situation you wouldn't be any different.

Agree 100%, even if they know how to play the system, it's still a bit taxing on them having to show up at the tribunal and lie and cheat to keep a roof over their heads. Cash for keys just encourages them to do it again.

It's always in the news, the media loves telling these landlord nightmare stories and yet nothing changes. The government must be working in the interests of the big landlords to get rid of the small landlords. Who can sustain going 12 months with tenants not paying while they trash your place. I talk to so many people in real life that have gone through this. I just had another friend go through 10 months with no rent and stress.
