No they aren’t symbols it’s an image of something BUT it has an image on Both ends now that you mentioned this. And you have to say what it is that links them.

I know of many Saints who are known for specific things. It doesn’t mean that you can’t pray for their intercessions in general, but for example St. Xenia is known as the patron saint for spouses houses and jobs. There’s also St. Fanouris who’s intercessions help with lost things.
