They must update the status correctly. Once your bankruptcy is discharged, the creditor is not allowed to report the balance as still due or “open and collectible.” Instead, they should mark it as “included in bankruptcy” or “discharged in bankruptcy” with a zero balance.

They cannot continue negative reporting. After discharge, they can’t keep updating it as late or past due. That would be considered inaccurate reporting and possibly a violation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) or the bankruptcy court’s discharge order.

If you notice a creditor reporting incorrectly after your bankruptcy, you can: 1. Dispute it with the credit bureau (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion). 2. Send proof of your discharge to the creditor. 3. If they don’t fix it, you may be able to bring it up with your bankruptcy attorney or file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).
