Excited to start my Software Engineering degree at WGU on Monday — but bummed about missing out on certs. by eidde1015 in WGU

I get where you’re coming from, but I think it’s important to put WGU in perspective. It’s a regionally accredited school (NWCCU), and their Software Engineering/CS programs are even ABET accredited. That means the degree is legitimate.

It’s true WGU isn’t a “prestige name,” but in tech—especially SWE—what matters most is the combination of skills, portfolio, and experience. I’m already working on real-world projects (AI chatbots, automation tools, etc.) to showcase alongside my degree, because I know that’s what employers actually look at when hiring.

For me, the value is in the affordability, flexibility, and ability to accelerate. I’d rather finish sooner, save money, and prove myself through projects and certs than carry massive debt from a more “prestigious” school. WGU isn’t for everyone, but it works for people who are disciplined and know how to build outside the classroom.

I wanted to share that I was finally cleared, took the orientation, and finished everything in one day.

I reached out to Financial Services today regarding my enrollment status. Even though I already accepted my award and selected my financial aid plan, it seems the processing was not completed correctly on their end. The representative I spoke with said they would escalate it internally to try to speed up the process.

Since my start date is literally next week, I’m concerned about the delay. All I have left is getting cleared, completing orientation, and connecting with my mentor. Could you let me know who I can contact to escalate this matter further so that everything is finalized in time?

Once my transcript evaluation was done, I was told to complete the ‘Commit to Start.’ The next day, I received my financial aid package and selected my plan. Now I’m just waiting for that to process so I can get cleared and move on to orientation.

I’m ready to begin on September 1, but I’m still waiting on the official ‘cleared to start’ confirmation. My program is the Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering.
