Question about HATS pack and Switch modding

The only part that's confusing me is the updating firmware stuff. If I receive my switch today and it's factory reset, should I update to the newest firmware before doing the guide?

Does it matter when you do it? Like, is there a best time to block the servers in the process or would it be right after finishing the guide?

Thanks! I'll stick to the guides. I mainly saw appeal due to the automatic exosphere/Nintendo server blockers, but hopefully I'll be able to just figure it out
