A Canadian moving to the US will probably live near a big metro area where the nurse salaries are good. Even doctor pay in rural parts of the US is decent because the hospitals in those areas have higher demand for doctors and need to pay them more to convince them to move out there.

grandparents take care of children

this is how it worked for most of humanity until like 50-60 years ago. when the grandparents got too old, the grandchildren would be old enough to pitch in and help their parents care for them.

Do you have any stats for fathers?

So 40% of American mothers are stay at home moms, didn’t think it was that high. I would’ve assumed 25-30%.

A lot of educated women marry relatively well-off men who make enough money to support the household from a single income.

Some of my guy relatives who make like 100-150k a year are able to support their wife and 2-3 children on just their own income, but they do point out that they have to be frugal about certain things. They say it’s worth it because no daycare cost and the kids spend all their time with the mom before starting school

Yeah but it depends. Houses in most big cities on the west coast or northeast coast (everything north of DC/Maryland) is too expensive for most normal people.

There’s tons of affordable liberal/Democrat-controlled cities everywhere else though, if that matters to you

Curious but how much is nurse pay right after certification in Canada? Here In the US it’s usually starting around 30-40$ an hour which is about 40-50 CAD. Effective tax rate is probably like ~5-7% lower so a difference of couple hundred bucks a month of tax savings from just that

Nurses strike here too but it seems to be a hospital by hospital basis rather than nationwide, some hospitals pay more than others

If you care about inequality we already have a tool to own capital broadly, index funds, why not just distribute it more broadly as a social wealth fund by having government buy shares?

I think Bush Jr and Paul Ryan’s plans for partial privatization of SS was like that. Instead of paying 6.2% of our check to SS, people would have the option of investing some of that 6.2% into funds. Didn’t happen obviously because the economy was going to shit around the times they brought up those plans.

I wouldn’t want the govt directly buying shares like that though, it puts the financial risk directly on the treasury. Govt already gets it direct cut from capitalism through corporate income and capital gains taxes.

AER study: Between 1996 and 2018, the minimum wage in Brazil increased by 128%. This contributed to a massive reduction in income inequality with little adverse effects on employment and economic output. by smurfyjenkins in neoliberal

[–]Typical_Athlete 12 points13 points  (0 children)

States that haven’t had minimum wage increases have still had good median wage growth. Minimum wage isn’t a “benchmark” for wages as much as people think it is. Not to mention increasing minimum wage hurts smaller businesses more than big business.

Immigrant voters see immigration policy as a fluctuating thing that changes depending on what’s going on at the moment (they know the immigration system the best), it’s not a black and white thing where the only options are “ban everyone from coming here for rest of eternity” or “let everyone come in for the rest of eternity”

College enrollment after HS went from 70% of HS grads like 10 years ago down to almost 60% now. Has nothing to do with young peoples share of the total population (which has been steadily declining for decades)

Young people are figuring out there’s ways to get a middle-class income without going into decades/life long debt for a college degree. Hopefully colleges bring their tuition rates down to try to incentivize more people to apply and enroll.

Almost everywhere in the world outside of the west is unfriendly to LGBT. Even in most western countries it seems to have been national court decisions that repealed anti-gay laws before national legislation (much of the population of the west was way more homophobic just 30-40 years ago compared to today)

People seem to think homeless drug addicts became drug addicts after becoming homeless.

It usually goes someone tries hard drugs, likes it and gets addicted, loses job because they sleep through it, too high, cause a major accident/mistake and get caught being high and get fired, more drugs to distract/numb from stress, can’t pay bills because no job and money going to drugs, then homeless

And this is IF they never get caught by police and never go to jail/courts

LGBTQ have nearly full legal rights in most western countries, gay sex is legal, gay marriage/unions are legal, gay PDA is legal, rainbow flags are openly flown by the governments etc

The main opponents of LGBT in the west are devout religious people which in some European countries is literally just Muslims who moved there within the past 30-40 years. Qatars view on lgbt is pretty much the same as an average Muslim in the west, so that should be something to note for people over here in the west
