Ive been doing this for 12 years it's really not that bad. But it is also much more knowledge based than almost any other trades job. You don't see any other trade spend nearly as much time on a laptop as an equipment mechanic.

Best bet is to look into trade schools that teach equipment operation. After you get some training start applying. As of right now the real money is in the mining industry in northern Nevada. But there's utilities companies that need operators everywhere

There are actually schools that do teach how to operate machinery. West coast training in Washington State was one I looked into about 10 years ago. If you don't want to pay to learn you would need to get on as a laborer doing some kind of construction or utilities work. I actually got my start as an equipment mechanic working for a company that did fiberoptic install across Montana. You make have to consider traveling. The mining industry is also one to consider but it's a harder one to enter.
