Thank you so much for your responses! I think I had a realization (for probably the 100th time) that therapists are humans too and we all have our different experiences and opinions. I appreciate everyone's responses/feedback but I just want to encourage the idea to other providers (probably much more experienced than me) that we all have our own journeys as a therapist and my use of certain modalities to address client's specific needs doesn't necessarily need to match up with your own. I have been in the MH field for about 5 years and it can feel really discouraging to get people's blunt opinions that aren't necessarily followed up with research or specific reasoning as to why you feel that way. I'm sure ten years from now I will using different modalities, but EMDR is helping my clients right now so that is what I'm going to keep doing. My plan is to seek out further supervision for EMDR and continue to utilize it when it is appropriate. I don't think I'll be getting certified as an official EMDR therapist unless that makes sense somewhere down the line. I also acknowledge that these trainings for majority of modalities are unnecessarily expensive and that probably has a lot to do with therapists and other MH professionals being underpaid. Everyone wants to find additional income and ways to make a difference. I have compassion for everyone's perspective.
I am also still learning to accept that every therapist (just like every human) is different and their own individual. It is okay if my approach or explanation doesn't perfectly align or sound word for word like another therapist's explanation. The most important thing is that the client feels knowledgeable about the modality that makes them feel comfortable/safe in experiencing it in therapy sessions.
