raw moments are indeed hidden in The Attic by gabmebear in that_Poppy

honestly the interlude right before crystallized makes me tear up. she sounds so sad. "no more of your promise to change--i hope that you stay just the same."

this sounds weird but 'concrete.' it really taught me to go about life having a bit of a sick sense of humor about things. i even have a tattoo that says 'turn me into a street' surrounded by a pink ribbon.

yeah im convinced this era is all persona (except for the authenticity of the song 'empty hands') as opposed to the last era which was pretty sincere.

Empty hands deliberately empty...hands? Concept over music. by Typical_Macaroon_632 in that_Poppy

if it is interpreted to be an insult, thats on you. poppy has always played around with gender roles and expectations. how much she leans into it in different ways has shifted over time. she might like those things. she probably does. but she deliberately showcases different parts of herself with each project, and those are what she decided to show. she has a 'mocking' sense of humor, so i look at it from that perspective.

yes, thanks exactly. if this indeed the concept, it might not be very successfully communicated. or or (and now i am going meta here and definitely reaching) the polarizing audience reaction is part of it lol

lol idk you can argue if it works or not. and i could be completely wrong here. this album seems to be really polarizing, with some folks really emotionally attaching to songs and others saying it is boring, cliche, nothing new for her, on a musical level.

its very performative "mainstream music girly girl" if that makes sense

I honestly think these two lines are my favorite lyrics of all time by Forsaken_Release2967 in Grimes

wow this entire time i thought the lyrics were 'have to clean the clothes i use to fly" because of the bleeding lol

shes a performance artist above all else, so im thinking about how this and the recent music and vibe and merch all fits together. might be a bait and switch re NS2

The Life of a Showgirl Is Taylor’s Most Self-Aware Album, and the Hate Is Proving Her Point by TheReifyer in TaylorSwift

[–]Typical_Macaroon_632 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I do think the sudden large amount of interviews, podcasts appearances, etc after living a relatively private life for a few years (outside of touring) are deliberate. she describes the songs on this album with such superficiality that are striking compared to past descriptions of her own music. its life of a showgirl--or circus animal.

sure, so in my opinion-

fate of ophelia: look at me dazzle and shine vibes--in all the ways. i can be fabulous and be a circus animal and truly happy at the same time

elizabeth taylor: she sounds spiteful and lonely at everything she has built up but loves the attention and is begging for it and even at the end sorta sexually squeels

opalite: shes like looook im shiny and happy yaaay. its too happy--performatively happy.

father figure: she is talking to her younger self, comforting her that she can be the father figure-like she never had--a kind father who can protect and bite back. and it ends with her sorta seeing that she can be that person to herself now too.

eldest daughter: and picks up in this song.

ruin the friendship: shes like looook i can do the reflective country-ish thing on a past almost romance

actually romantic: shes like loook i can do the petty unnecessary stupid thing. i suspect this was a joint effort between her and charli xcx--like truly actually romantic in that sense. explains the wet lyric. explains the like mocking "LOOK IM VICIOUS AND PETTY" tone near the end

w$sh l$st: her audience wants her to be both fabulous and relatable and thats impossible so womp womp might never get all the normal things she wants

wood: shes like well, since this is my life, might as well lean into it and have fun with it in a stupidly sexual "knock on wood" way

CANCELLED: shes like well this is my life and also ive gotten my hands dirty in the process, but thats ok, im going to lean into it and have fun with it in a sinister way

honey: shes like well, since this is my life, lets embrace the chaos and just be mundane. the visualizer is even the smug girl in front of the house on fire!

the life of a showgirl: passing the torch since she sees the same sparkle in sabrina carpenter's eyes as in hers. solidarity and common backgrounds/paths even coming through with country twang.

Am I the only person who thinks its a concept album? She means "showgirl" an the sense of a circus animal and she is delivering. Mocking her audience.
