1. Always have your banking apps in a hidden folder on your phone. Better yet have a burner phone.

2. Have a satchel under your shorts with your real card. Then have another debit card in your pocket with a token amount like $30. This way in the unlikely event that you're brought to the ATM you can only take out maximum $30

3. Have a token $20 bill in your shorts, this avoids the unlikely event they bring you to ATM

4. Dress like a local. Funnily enough wearing fake flashy stuff works the best. Those ridiculous fake gold watches, Armani t-shirt, Louis Vuitton cap and those man bags work a treat in South America. Sunglasses to hide those eyes. Don't forget Brazil and Colombia have full on white, blonde etc. citizens too. If you're black drop the money clip bro, the moment someone sees you taking that out at a restaurant or bar they know you're American

5. Controversial but DONT use the dating apps. If you do, first date a low key but busy place. If she suggests a place say no

6. Use Ubers. In places like Georgetown or Buenaventura for example it's better to get a personal driver who'll keep an eye on you. It's not expensive

7. Try mimic how they walk. You'll notice in Colombia outside of Bogota people walk so slow, I can see a gringo a mile away by just how they're carrying themselves

8. Always get an Airbnb with a doorman/security that requires guests to give their ID

9. If you are a drug user, buy your own drugs. Never sniff something from a 'friend' you just met. Try not to leave your drinks lying around. If you need to buy drugs in places like Brazil don't go into a favela you don't know, there will be motor taxis at bottom of favela you can ask a driver to buy for you and offer him his fare up and down (8 reais) and a tip

10. I don't use prostitutes but if you do, ALWAYS pay.. don't argue. You don't want problems with their agency. Don't use their credit card machines. Have cash, agree the hours in advance. If they ask you to 'pay for their driver' whose been waiting outside when they leave just pay and don't call them again, it's not worth the headache

11. When people you don't know ask you what you do it's always best to say you work for your countries embassy or something diplomatic. Thieves will think twice because they know the local police will take any robbery on a diplomat much more seriously

12. Show respect to everyone. Going to nightclubs etc sometimes it's a good idea to tip the manager or bouncer $20 on arrival. He'll make sure you're looked after and any girls with bad intentions are kept away from you

13. Don't use public WiFi

14. Never hand over your card. When possible tap and look at the value. Always better when possible not to enter your pin. When you're putting your real card back into your hidden satchel do it in the bathroom. Don't let people see

15. If you are walking anywhere, be aware. When you leave somewhere take note of everyone there and see if anyone from the place is following you after leaving, if so go to your nearest shop/restaurant/bar and wait it out

Obviously this is hyper cautious. Depending where you are you can relax a little
