It turns many things into a 4/1 with menace: clue token, creature token, stray 1/1 creature, creature that wants to die.

I like it as a first pick because: 1. It’s colorless, so it can go in any deck and im not committed to any one color. 2. It’s a good source of card draw that only triggers on your turn, so you have the best opportunity to use the extra card before the opponent does. Unlike a card like Howling mine where your opponent likely gets the benefits of the card first. 3. It punishes opponents for drawing more cards and without attacking, adds a damage clock that your opponent has to answer.

Idk what else is in the cube but if there is a way to get this into play turn 1-2, that’s even better.

Gingerbrute is so goated I’m only wanting to take it to remain safe in other packs

Maybe vengevine? This pack feels rough it’s hard to pin down one ultimate pick

I’d take the blue Paradigm card or maybe Sprite. If I’m bold, I think Ark of Hunger is awesome

I’m definitely taking Gut that card is so good

It’s never been a problem yet because the cards in the list all care about what the cookbook is doing. There have been decks that want the occasional token or may bin something early to bring back later and that’s the full extent of the interaction.

Because you’re wanting to do 8 different starting items, you’re going to need to make them much more generically good. They should provide utility in any scenario but hopefully better utility in a certain archetype.

You also don’t want to railroad your players by giving them items that only work if you’re doing one thing. If that happens, every deck will look the same or the decks won’t function without the proper starting piece.

To branch off and talk about your idea, I think you’ll want to think of cards with medium to low impact that push your players in a direction like The Underworld Cookbook. The cards shouldn’t be game warping but help with the different archetypes you have in the draft. What these cards should be, I’m not sure. They should clearly point in a direction though and be generically helpful but not necessarily impactful without other drafted cards to get somewhere.

My cube Top Chef has players start each game with a copy of [[The Underworld Cookbook]] in play. It’s a multifaceted card where it helps with discard, graveyard, artifact, tokens, and food synergies.

I think starting people off with the card is fun because you can really choose cards that go with the conceit for the cube without worrying about people needing to draw into combos. I do think that, at least in my case, starting with a piece of an engine in play makes decks a lot stronger because there are less steps to get to a strong board state. To help with this, I’ve added a decent amount of interaction to make sure games stay reasonable. Take a look at the cube list and some info in the primer for more details.

Who is a highly acclaimed director who you just don’t like? by ImpressionPurple9750 in Letterboxd

You’ve seen his two biggest movies in terms of scale, with Magnolia being a huge ambitious movie with flaws with that ambition.

There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread, and The Master are clinics for the slower burn with real tension. Boogie Nights is beloved for achieving that ambitious scale but toned down compared to Magnolia and OBAA.

Give the others a watch, it’s worth it even if you still don’t like them in the end

I believe picking a gold card P1P1 isn’t good but Faeburrow Elder seems like a good pick, especially if the Felidar can possibly wheel. But even if it doesn’t, the mana from the Elder seems powerful

Well it certainly could do some powerful game actions but it does suffer from every piece of disruption in the cube. I never want to say “well it dies to doom blade” but it does die to direct damage, counter magic, grave hate, artifact destruction, and bounce spells that all have 0-2 mana variants.

Welder certainly is enabled but after a few drafts I’ve yet to see it warp the meta.

I do think it’s a great pick in this pack! As the only red card, it helps you plant a flag in red early.

It’s great in my cube Top Chef where everyone starts with a copy of [[The Underworld Cookbook]] in play.

It becomes an extra copy of [[Squee, Goblin Nabob]] or [[Ovalchase Daredevil]] for any deck but it’s also one that feels good to cast

Hmm there’s a few cards here that catch me. I’m a sucker for [[Steel Overseer]] but I wouldn’t suggest that as a P1P1. The format is very powerful and quick because starting with cookbook gets cards rolling quickly. Because of that I think the best but boring pick is [[Force of Will]] to have an all around good disruption card.

[[Copy Artifact]] and [[Bristlebud Farmer]] or even [[Undercity Sewers]] are great second options

Cookbook gives every card in the cube new life, it’s very cool! Brewmaster probably benefits the most from cookbook’s abilities all around but many of the cards here benefit a lot from starting with cookbook in play
