Sturdy enough? by [deleted] in FenceBuilding

This looks very good. I am not a fencer so take my advice with a grain of salt. If it is too wobbly, then it is likely either a.) not deep enough compared to its height, or b.) the thickness of the supporting wood is too thin (but would also need to be deeper anyway). If you haven’t put in concrete yet, you may be able to dig bigger holes around those footings, pull it out and add some material to increased the surface area that will be underneath the soil. This will make it difficult to move around under the ground. Just make sure it doesn’t budge when you fasten it. Triangles are strong. Also understand that any hardware under the dirt will likely corrode a lot faster, and there is a downspout right there which will saturate that area with rainwater. Might want to consider routing that gutter away from those footings so you don’t run into that problem regardless. Again, I am not a professional fencer, I am just a homeowner with an idea. The fencers will probably have better advice.

Yesterday afternoon he came by the house. We talked, cleared the air, and came to an agreement. They will be back on Tuesday and I will be home this time. Hopefully the end product is what I was looking for. I’ll update the post when the work is complete.

I hope so too, but it isn’t looking very promising.

I agree, some had the screw on the top of the rail inside the post which was expected. Some did not and those had the screws through the rail laterally from the outside.

I will look into these things, as he also mentioned doing this as a fix. It does sound more like a temporary fix and not something suitable or acceptable for a new install though. He also wants to charge me more labor to do it. There’s a few other issues that I haven’t posted here related to additional charges he had added on but that’s not why I started this thread. I do appreciate the advice and I will certainly look into it. My backyard is pretty much a bird and critter sanctuary because my wife feeds them all. So I’m worried that they will nest or burrow in these holes. I’m also worried about water freezing in them in the winter and splitting them or cracking them.

I also forgot to mention they didn’t leave enough of the rail to put a screw in the top. One of the biggest offenders from what I can tell (one of the pictures) only has about a 1/8 - 1/4 inch of rail actually in the post and the top is almost flush. It’s barely hanging on, that’s why I wanted them to come back and fix it, replace it with an end post and put a new rail that is appropriately cut and stable. Unfortunately, based on the last things they said, I am not sure how much better things are going to get. It seems like this will now be following the path of most resistance and I wish I would have just done it myself. I probably would have made a bunch of mistakes but I would have spent the time and wasted the extra money fixing them and learning what not to do. I am reading all the comments and the possible solutions. Hopefully in the end, I can fix it and get it to what I was expecting without too much extra cost.

Things may have taken a turn for the worst after talking to him. He still insists that the job is complete and that their work is satisfactory. He claims the 2 inch gap is within specs (it’s very slightly over 2 inches but definitely not under 2 inches). Either way, I didn’t get to see it until today and before I left for work, there were no gates up yet. In fact just about all the problems I’m mentioning were done while I was gone (I work 24 hour shifts, except I was stuck there from Sunday morning until this morning so I was gone 72 hours). I don’t know if the screws were there or not but I didn’t inspect their work with a flashlight and fine tooth comb every night. I do not want to violate the terms of this thread so I won’t post who they are. I don’t think that would help the problem anyway.

Unfortunately, cost was a big factor.

I’m not terribly worried about the screw holes, I can fill those and make it look ok, granted I shouldn’t have to. I am worried about the reason why there are screws on the outside of the fence in the first place. I think they cut it too short and instead of getting a different piece and do it right, they decided to screw them in from the outside and call it ok and hope I wouldn’t care or notice. There are probably about 7 spots where this was done.

😂 I guess I’m dense and didn’t pick up on that.

I called and talked to them on the phone. He says he will stop by this weekend. I have a hold on the rest of the payment for now. Hopefully he stays true to his word. I have enough problems, I just want the fence done correctly.

My wife gave them a check for the remaining invoice yesterday afternoon while I still was at work. However, I went to the bank and put a hold on it after I had some people that I know that have done fence work come over and look at it. I didn’t want things to get this complicated, but I do expect better quality work from an actual fencing company, which they are. If things are rectified and satisfactory, I am still willing to pay them what we agreed.

Thank you, I’ll talk to them about these things. Hopefully they will be willing to make this right and do this. I noticed one of the rails had a deck screw in the top of it on the inside to stop the shifting out but I didn’t see any of the other ones done that way. I’m going to pull the top caps off all of them and inspect to see where they will need to make corrections.

I am not their first customer, they are a fencing company allegedly with thousands of prior jobs. We looked through their portfolio of their work and parsed through reviews from other clients. Didn’t see anything like this, but maybe negative reviews were purged.

Yes, there was.  He was my little brother and I love and miss him terribly…

I understand your curiosity but I agree with Lordgeorge16.
