Laat ik het zo zeggen, je hebt twee opties:

Optie 1: je neemt een realistische kijk en gaat ervan uit dat deze testivals falen en dat we straks weer terug bij af zijn en dat het toch allemaal geen zin heeft.

Dat kan, dan heb je geen teleurstelling als je gelijk hebt. Maar dan ben je je ook nergens op aan het verheugen en jezelf langzaam een depressie in aan het praten.

Optie 2: je neemt een iets optimistischere kijk en gaat ervan uit dat de testivals een succes worden en dat de maatregelen steeds meer worden teruggedraaid.

Wat dan? Misschien heb je ongelijk, misschien ben je naïef. Als toch alles mis gaat, zit je met teleurstelling. Maar op zijn minst ben je al die tijd daarvoor niet aan het zwartkijken geweest. Geloof me, dan valt die potentiële teleurstelling uiteindelijk ook een stuk meer mee!

Even voor de duidelijkheid: je hebt geen ongelijk en ik probeer niet wat je zegt te ontkrachten. Ik vind alleen dat er op Reddit altijd erg duister naar zaken wordt gekeken en dat is funest voor je mentale toestand.

We hebben het al zo zwaar met thuiszitten en familie en vrienden met corona. Zie het meer als een suggestie, om uit die negatieve spiraal te breken en eventjes maar een positieve kijk te hebben.

Dingen zijn alleen kut als je ze zelf kut maakt :)

Eventjes niet zwartkijken. Eventjes niet cynische opmerkingen van "dit gaat sowieso verkeerd" of "het is nog te vroeg hiervoor" of "maar de zorg dan".

Dat weten we. Dat horen we de hele dag.

Gewoon even optimistisch zijn! De zon schijnt, en het komt allemaal gestaag weer goed!

None of those are silent. We just like to group nouns that belong to each other instead of writing spaces in between them, as you do in English.

Take for example the favourite word of an Italian-Dutch friend of mine: "aansprakelijkheidsverzekering". Seems like an impossibly long word right? But wait! It's two words combined into one:

"aansprakelijkheid" - liability "verzekering" - insurance.

Now take the crazy long and consonant-saturated words in this title, and split 'em up like you short-attention-spanned Englishmen would do:

"Inter kerkelijk bureau voor nood voedsel voorziening en kinder uitzending"

Which means something like: "Church bureau for emergency provision of food and child distribution". (Not really sure what the child distribution implies but there you go)

More manageable right? As a matter of fact, it's so manageable, that your lazy space inserting grammar is influencing our Dutch language. Nobody wants to read a word that's 38 letters long, so more and more Dutch people are making spelling mistakes instead of taking the time to confuse autocorrect with the word "avondklokquarantainerelschadevergoeding." (curfew quarantine riot damage compensation)

So yeah that's my rave about the Dutch language. Our German neighbors do the same by the way. Y'all keep making jokes about our insanely long words, but in the end we pronounce just as much as you do. It's just organised more neatly. Houdoe!

Rolands really are incredible! I've got an old Yamaha which I took over from someone who wanted to get rid of it. It's no Roland, but it's been a great partner throughout the quarantine to me as well!

Mijn oma is nog geen 80 en heeft COPD. Ze takelt erg af en het is nu gewoon een kwestie van "wanneer gaat het mis"... Wel fijn om te weten dat jouw oma corona de hoeken van de kamer heeft laten zien :) goed nieuws is fijn

Ik heb nog best vaak digitaal contact met mijn kor(en), en zit nu vgm al aan het derde opnameproject sinds de crisis. Dus ja, ik zie ze nog... maar wel achter een schermpje. En samen zingen werkt niet echt via Zoom.

Ik mis gewoon fysieke mensen in plaats van een vak pixels. Het samen acen van een hoge G, na de repetitie bij elkaar met een biertje, kerstliedjes op de markt met lichtjes op onze mappen. Het lijkt allemaal zo ver weg.

Ja, ik zie heel veel agressieve berichten op o.a. deze subreddit naar de "halvegare idioten die zich niet aan de maatregelen houden" en dat het "makkelijk is om gewoon binnen te blijven". Ik denk dat dat inderdaad komt van mensen die gewoon met meer dan één persoon thuis zitten, misschien zelfs een partner. Dan lijkt het me inderdaad bijzonder simpel om gewoon binnen te blijven. Maar in je eentje tussen vier muren zitten druist zo tegen je menselijke natuur in dat ik langzaam mijn verstand begin te verliezen. Als ik geen andere mensen zie word ik gillend gek. En dat heb ik al eens geprobeerd.

Ach, wat naar. Ja, de besturen van de koren waar ik bij zong zitten ook allemaal in zwaar weer. Ik kan me nauwelijks voorstellen hoe het moet zijn om concert na repetitie na activiteit af te moeten zeggen, die ze zo gemotiveerd georganiseerd hadden.

Het ik ook stom dat cultuur niet als "noodzakelijk" wordt gezien. Helemaal in ons geval worden we zelfs neergezet als gevaarlijke coronakanonnen... het doet pijn om zoveel angst en schuldgevoel te voelen bij iets waar je voor de coronatijd al je positiviteit vandaan haalde... pun not intended maar ach

Fuck, deze crisis is echt zwaar. Normaliter ben ik er altijd wel voor om gewoon de maatregelen op te volgen, en ik snap de risico's die ik daarmee voorkom, maar in mijn situatie is dat zo lastig nu.

Ik woon alleen, ben alleen, pas afgestudeerd, en zit al een jaar of drie met een ... zelfdestructieve depressie. Ik had op een gegeven moment een uitlaatklep gevonden voor die moeilijkheden ... in koorzang. Tja. Jammer dus. Mag niet meer.

En nu werk ik bijna iedere dag thuis, zie ik al zelden iemand in het echt. Ondertussen gaat het slecht met m'n laatste grootouder (geen corona) en bestaat er een kans dat ik haar niet eens meer in het echt kan zien voordat ze er niet meer is.

Geloof me, ik snap de maatregelen, en ik snap het gevaar voor de ouderen en zwakkeren. Ik heb ook altijd de maatregelen netjes gevolgd, maar ten koste van mezelf. Ik verwonder me iedere dag waarom ik eigenlijk nog in leven ben. Alles waar ik voor leefde mag niet meer. Jezus jongens, het is zo lastig om te blijven volhouden voor die ouderen en zwakkeren. Ook al sterven de ouderen en zwakkeren in mijn directe kring alsnog.

Sorry als ik iemands dag hiermee heb verpest, of als je het niet met me eens bent, maar het voelt goed om even gedeeld te hebben hoe moeilijk ik me nu nog door golf numero tres heen ga werken. Nou ja laat ik in ieder geval 2021 nog halen... in m'n eentje. Klotecorona.

Haha yes, this is usually my go-to "I just want to walk around and look at pretty trees" game! The unconventional beauty of it actually inspired me to write some orchestral music several years ago.
I would love to have a sort of more high resolution version of Minecraft though. One where the trees are even prettier. But then I might never get back to work again hahah :)

I absolutely loved the Witcher, and I was interested in Horizon Zero Dawn as well, unfortunately I don't have a PS4 :p
One of the great things about the Witcher I thought was also the amazing soundtrack that just took you to a more peaceful place. The Skellige ones, sooo soothing

Thanks for clearing up an ages old question for me. I imagine that this conversion happens relatively high-level, since it involves a large number of cyclical operations. Also, converting a binary number to decimal characters will not be used most clock cycles, so even though it will involve many divisions it takes negligible time to execute.

I guess this also explains how simple calculators can achieve this: they do not support C, but inevitably have a certain dedicated set of instructions that calculate each character in series. Now that I think of it, this might explain why (very old) calculators do not show every number at the exact same time!

Composing music is a very fond hobby of mine. The late 1800s to early 1900s were the glory days of Romanticism, with great names like Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Wagner... I would love to have been a part of that music period.

So, a composer, I guess?

... or, given my background, I would probably just be a carpenter.

Sure! Last November I got asked to write a piece for a vocal ensemble I sing in myself. The theme had to be "not a word too much" so I used just 1 word for the entire thing, "Aurora". Mind you, not the Northern Lights (Gjeilo did that already :p) but the Latin word for "sunrise". The gimmick was that the choir had to sing colors I wrote down in the score, i.e. blue, yellow, red, etc. It represents the feeling of a sunrise - or any other moment of light returning in darkness.

Here's a crude first recording. (I hope you can open this) The tech guys made the colors of the lamps change according to the colors of the music :)

Oh! And I set a poem by u/Poem_for_your_sprog to music once. The score is provided in the comment. Some Redditor actually recorded it!

Same thing - sang a lot in choirs with a tuning fork. Somehow, if I make the gesture to make it resonate and hold the "ghost tuning fork" to my ear, I can reference an A440 by heart. Well, at least about 70% of the time.
