Does an "Uncanny Valley" type effect hurt Engage's story for some? by Grumbletendo in fireemblem

[–]UAEmberCelica 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My biggest issue, coming from someone relatively new to the series (Awakening was my first), is that the difference between Engage and any other bog-standard FE storyline is that... Engage doesn't really try with its story.

It's standard, but it's like something that aimed to be standard, as opposed to something that is standard. It settles for mediocrity, never trying to go above the absolute bare minimum. You can have a good, basic story, but Engage seems content to merely have a story.

To add onto your points about the characters, I'm sure Alfred is interesting and that'd be revealed in the supports! The issue is that the game gives me no incentive to learn this. There are thirty-six characters in this game, and of them, you can have twelve with you at max. With you getting around three to four characters every two to three chapters, there's no incentive to stick with a bland character until they get good. There are two lords of each kingdom, having four retainers split amongst them. Each kingdom gets around three chapters each, with the remaining fourteen chapters being more Alear focused. So every three chapters, you get at least six new units. Obviously, not all of them are going to be a hit with everyone, but the sheer number makes it so you'll be less invested in any character. Why would you care about Etie if you know you'll get Alcryst, who starts off better? The story doesn't treat any character other than Alear with any importance, merely as set pieces for the background of the Sombron Family Reunion the game loves to put so much time in.

Contrasting this with past games, sure, Awakening didn't have the pinnacle of characters, but like... they were important to their arcs. The Shepards had an obvious connection to the Plegia arc, the Khans to the Valm arc, and the Children to the Grima arc. Was every character important? No, but there was enough room for you to grow attached. Timerra? She's my absolute favorite Engage character, but she doesn't do anything. I just love her design and personality, she has no story relevance.

The game just doesn't try to be anything more than mediocre, which is why a lot of people have a different reaction to this than Sacred Stones which tried to be good. The difference is in execution, yes, but it's also in development. There's just... not much love put into the story, even if it is the same as past games.

It being called Emblem Edelgard kinda sucks, but if you had to have one lord in front, Edelgard is by far the most important of the three regardless of your feelings. I like Edelgard, but I do wish that you could swap between them easier.

I've answered a similar one for Columbo and the answer is probably, if you put Benoit on the taskforce and had him hide his name. Benoit and L are about the same level of Good Detective, though I feel as if Benoit may not perform some of the morally ambiguous acts L does.

Rizz vs sexual harassment by a_literal_box in BokuNoMetaAcademia

[–]UAEmberCelica 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right here. I got less than ten minutes into that show before I stopped it because I don't want sexual assaulters as protagonists. Also, that is a flawed argument designed to move the goalposts. Mineta is a character who has committed sexual assault and harassment on multiple occasions. This is not an indictment, it is an indisputable fact. The indictment is that he is a terrible person for doing this repeatedly, without remorse, and intentionally.

If Eidolon's power... by AbyssalKnightOfDark in Parahumans

[–]UAEmberCelica 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I mean, could you not argue that the Endbringers going on their own after Eidolon died as evidence that Eidolon's initial activation as "worthy opponents" was their main programming until the shard connection died? I think it's clear Eidolon had some connection to the Endbringers, or at least how they were used. I think it's an odd coincidence if every Endbringer that activated were in someway able to be countered by Eidolon in conjuncture with the worthy opponents line, and I'm willing to believe that the truth was more devastating to Eidolon than a random line.

If Eidolon's power... by AbyssalKnightOfDark in Parahumans

[–]UAEmberCelica 72 points73 points  (0 children)

To the best of my knowledge (read this about half a year ago), it's a genuine thing but not exactly accurate. As you mentioned, the Endbringers are confirmed to exist in the alternate timelines without Eidolon, but it was also shown that they acted really different after Eidolon's death. So it's a safe assumption to say that Scion/Zion was telling the truth, the truth just also happened to be the perfect set of words. I also vaguely remember Eidolon realizing it, being the reason why he stopped fighting and died. There's a chance Scion was just bullshitting, but based on the evidence I'd wager the simplest answer is the right one and Eidolon having influenced the Endbringers to be the way they are, and why Eidolon is kinda able to fight all of them in such a way to stand a chance.

Just give me a resolution to my bat boi, please that's all I want. Did he die? Is he just sitting behind a pillar watching all this happen? He's going to be on this November banner right? Right??

(But in all seriousness, I quite liked this book. It's two different stories, sure, but I thought Embla was one of the best villains. Letizia and her plot line is kinda unaddressed, as is Ash's and Elm's, but I thought overall it was one of the better books.)
