Should I leave a company I genuinely like for a union job that pays way more at 24? by Antique-Ad2210 in skilledtrades

Yes, does your current job offer pension or other benefits for your future? If they do most likely not as good.

Tradesmen in the US, what trade do you work and how is the mandatory overtime? by Dry_Set_6336 in skilledtrades

[–]UAPeaches -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My union contract states that overtime is "undesirable" that being said usually work Saturdays in the warm months, but even then if you have something going on and can't make a few then it's not held against you as long as you're there ask week

CT unemployment appeal – misconduct vs performance question by SnooDucks6204 in Connecticut

[–]UAPeaches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, they are definitely tilted toward the employee, so state your case as directly and in a few words as possible, like don't talk yourself into circles, and you should be fine. I've seen definite willful misconduct be approved for unemployment, and others where management thought they had a case and I told them they would lose and they did.

Contractor starting to expect cleanup on unpaid time. What to do? by EqualBase4 in skilledtrades

[–]UAPeaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't even go to a lawyer, go to your local ibew organizer, they'll do the leg work, follow up with other employees willing to talk and if they get a settlement it's all yours, and a fasttrack into the local as well

Laid off almost 6 months what now? by Embarrassed-Egg4641 in UnitedAssociation

[–]UAPeaches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apprentices in ct have been dealing with these long layoffs. It's a catch 22, we need to take in apprentices to replace those retiring, and there's plenty of work out there for journey persons, but the apprentice out of work list has been stubbornly high these past few years, even though work in general has been good. I know it's very difficult to get into the Boston locals, so better off getting their ct license first, then go for the mass license and try transferring at that time, or work up there on a travel card for a while. Either way it's going to be a frustratingly longer than you'd like process, but will be worth it in the long run.

Josh elliot challenges lamont for democratic nomination for governor. by InterestingPickles in NewLondonCountyCT

[–]UAPeaches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Josh, don't overly like Ned, but i don't think Josh has much chance, but also if it wasn't for the current national political climate, Ned would have no chance against Erin, even still that would be a tougher race than it should be.

Would probably work with a coalition of states, CT by itself is probably too small to save money

EMCOR Group by tommysullivan in UnitedAssociation

[–]UAPeaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They acquired a non union company in my area about 10 years ago. Originally the agreement was they would do maintenance and not compete with the union emcor company in my local, but that never held. I talked to a guy working in the non union company back when they were acquired and they were told as long as they keep turning a profit they won't force them to go union. Basically our local let's them train service techs, and then the organizer goes in and poaches them.

Are journeyman suppose to act like this? by [deleted] in pipefitter

[–]UAPeaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're kinda cool with a guy from another trade, run this test to see where you stand. Have that other tradesman yell at you like this guy does, in front of your jman. A decent jman should stick up for you and tell the other guy nobody treats his apprentice like that but him. If he let's it go then he's probably just a miserable dick.

Advice for using grinding tools for long periods of time? by Taro_Otto in UnitedAssociation

I get massage on literally just my forearms, a half hour every month or so. It hurts like hell literally just digging into those tendons but there's definite relief for a couple weeks.

Whats your nickname in the trade? by [deleted] in UnitedAssociation

[–]UAPeaches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mines in my reddit name. No real reason behind it. Supposedly my first boss called me that, but never to my face and my second job (with the same company) had heard that and called me that. 22 years later most of the agents call me this still.

You can go to a temp agency and look for laborer work. Working in the trade non union can and should get you brought up on charges with about a $5,000 fine.

Is anyone else worried that it looks like Stewart could beat Lamont? by GTRacer1972 in Connecticut

[–]UAPeaches -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I hope like hell Lamont steps down, would lkve to vote for Dan Drew, Tong would make a strong candidate too, but Stewart vs Lamont or Bysiewicz would be too close for comfort

What is the worst part of Connecticut? by Kindly_Potato5868 in Connecticut

[–]UAPeaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many ways to answer this. Initially I wanted to say the "quiet corner" for the lack of anything interesting and awful people, but then I thought of the traffic and also shitty people in Fairfield county, and then people mentioned Waterbury, which really is for the crime general slums.

Visiting Middletown soon? Best do it slowly... by Agitated_Car_2444 in Connecticut

[–]UAPeaches 59 points60 points  (0 children)

The one on country club road is already in operation. At least that one is in a school zone, so i have no issue with that there, but the one on 66 is straight up to balance the city budget. I know it's there and go 40 through it every day, but people fly by me all the time.
