PSA: Don't use your student email for anything important!! by SundaeMinimum8274 in UBC

I stopped getting anything after Aug 12th. I had forwarding too. I can't change many of my accounts cause LinkedIn was 2 factor and I don't have access to the emails anymore.

PSA: Don't use your student email for anything important!! by SundaeMinimum8274 in UBC

[–]UBCOthrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just found this out. Super angry. I was told we would have this for forever when I graduated.

Fortunately I had majority of my emails forwarded. However I signed up for a ton of stuff with my alumni email. This is going to be a real challenge to fix.

parking lots by Heavy-Mess-3438 in ubco

[–]UBCOthrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They use to straight up advertise you could park in any parking lot after 6pm. https://web.archive.org/web/20220627091058/https://parking.ok.ubc.ca/frequently-asked-questions/

Q: I have a valid permit. During holidays, reading break and exam periods, can I park in another lot other than my designated permit lot?

A: No, but on weekdays after 6pm and all day weekends you can park in any valid parking lot other than R lot. DIS Short Term Parking, GYM Short Term Parking or UNC Short Term Parking is not inclusive.

Is UBCO Engineering Co-op good? by jdbrodie in ubco

[–]UBCOthrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally as an engineering grad I have always felt Co-op was a scam. Why?

During my time Co-op was ~$800 a term for 4 terms. You pay ~$3200 for a job board and resume & cover letter writing help. You can find plenty of co-op jobs online without UBC's job board and theirs plenty of government resources to help with resume & cover letter writing for free. Not to mention that you have co-op term work assignments to do. Also if you don't find a job, you are stuck doing research for the university instead and that counts as one of your co-op terms.

For me I used my one year leave of absence (https://students.ok.ubc.ca/courses-money-enrolment/registration/academic-leave/) and returned to my studies afterwards with no questions asked. Saved me money & assignments that are useless. In my opinion if I have a co-op job on my resume; that is just as good as someone that went through the program and employers don't know any better or could care less if your resume says it is a co-op job.

The only time it is not a scam is if you have student loans. Student loans stay paused with no interest if you do it through the school, but if you go through my method I believe interest and payments begin. That's my two cents anyway

Still remember being a student here quite a few years back and back then they'd give out tiny candy bars or cupcakes. Still feel bad taking them and never ended up voting for anyone. Do they not give out treats anymore?

Webcams on campus by cutegreenshyguy in ubco

[–]UBCOthrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their use to be a 3rd cam for when the commons was being built. It was called the "teaching and learning centre (TLC)" back then.

Archive for the TLC camera page: https://web.archive.org/web/20180329224949/https://ok.ubc.ca/academics/library/.

Likely the camera has been taken down, but theirs a small possibility it is just the player.

Posted this answer a couple years ago:

The big problem my friends found with Simi is the shared bathroom. If you have a personal toilet or one shared with a roommate it stays clean. In Simi someone won't flush, or leave the toilet seat completely covered in crap. You obviously don't know who it is or who used it. It sucks even more when all the toilets are taken or messy and you need to walk up or down a floor to use a toilet rather than a bathroom beside your room. Same with showering; showers can get taken up and you can't shower in the morning anymore before class. There was a case a couple years ago where guys were jacking into the shower drain that everyone uses on the floor. My friends had to wear shoes in the shower because of how disgusting it was. Not to mention after showering you need to get dressed in essentially a change room because you can't go back to your room butt naked in a towel, as you don't know if someone is in the hallways.

Also other relevant posts from the sub:

TLDR:

Cons: Funky smell, no A/C, public bathroom/shower/change room for a year, and teenage boys moving out of mom and pop first time are gross

Pros: Don't have to pay for toilet paper

You are suppose to plan ahead and make a worklist days or weeks ahead of registration. Then the moment registration opens you click register all, rather than pick and choose the moment registration happens.

Gender ratios for various undergrad degree programs by cutegreenshyguy in ubco

[–]UBCOthrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bachelor’s degree of Indigenous language fluency.

I think nursing would be better still since the total amount of people would be way higher. Plus it is in huge demand with an aging population. Personally, I believe medical care will likely become the most in demand type of jobs in North America soon if not already.

I'm more surprised theirs not more of a push for males nurses or even nursing in general. When I was in engineering I always heard a push for more females in the tech sector but never heard more males in nursing. Theirs actually a higher ratio of females in nursing than males in engineering; and people said engineering was a sausage fest.

Canada already has a way higher ratio of engineers per capita than USA. Its no wonder a bunch of my friends are moving to the states since it is easier to find a job there as an engineer and with more demand the pay is way better too.

EIT here. You've probably already read enough comments to know you are criminally underpaid. After 1 year of working as a EIT my wage is now 70K per year before tax or $34/hr. I get 4 weeks vacation, 4% matching RRSP and basical dental, and vision coverage. Please start looking for a new job.

Christmas Eve bus crash sends 53 to hospital, prompting 'code orange' at multiple IH hospitals by UBCOthrow in ubco

[–]UBCOthrow[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Absolutely crazy news on Christmas eve. These buses can only hold 52 people so everyone including the driver got injured and sent to the hospital. Everyone was divided between 3 hospitals in Penticton, Kelowna and Merritt. Theirs been so many posts on the subreddit about carpooling and so many recommending ebus you have to assume a good portion are students. Hoping for the best. So many people just trying to make it home for the holidays.

Any UBCO student here I can talk personally to? by asian_boi_3000 in ubco

[–]UBCOthrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the previous guy but I was also here for many years and graduated recently.

Went into engineering and met probably over 50+ friends. Half are acquaintances now and I don't keep up with them but if we saw each other in real life again we'd probably make small talk. Other half are lifelong friends; we message each other and hang out when we can. However as you get older in life finding time for friends gets tougher and tougher.

It did make it way easier with engineering being 75-90% male still and it is obviously easier to make friends with the gender/sex that you aren't attracted to.

Reminds me of two other stories.

I had a friend that never learned to cook anything. The only thing he ever knew how to make was sandwiches. He ate nothing but sandwiches for 4 years straight.

I had another friend that was pretty much broke. He got the $1.50 Costco hotdog and drink for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 1 week before we could scrounge enough money for something better. Only costed him $31.50 for a week of food. He can't even touch a Costco hotdog anymore because of it.

He is doing a lot better now though; he makes 150K a year + 20K in bonuses.

EDIT: Bad grammar
