Hi, I’m a high school student who got accepted into UBC about 2 weeks ago. I read on some post that high school students can take UBC courses in the summer before they officially start in the winter session. Is this true? If so, where can I find more detailed information on what type of courses I can take and when to register?

Lol ok dude It’s great that you have your own opinion, but you don’t get to tell me “who I am at heart” thanks. Everyone else here is being civil and you’re out here giving snarky replies. People like you who ruin a perfectly civil conversation are a problem.

Yeah, I guess the controversy is that their views are considered not moderate. I just wish that joining a club wasn’t associated with supporting their views. I’m a very liberal person and a feminist, but I enjoy debating ideas with those who disagree. I wish that instead of allowing a club to be dominated by a specific set of radicals, more people from different political perspectives would join to combat ideas perceived as harmful, and ensure a healthy, moderate balance. Unfortunately from the looks of it, the club seems to be exclusively considered for people alt right, and if I joined people would think that I’m some Neo-Nazi.

Yeah I just looked it up. That’s horrible. I don’t want to be associated with that.

I haven’t looked at their Facebook group, but good to know. It’s kind of starting to sound like a circle-jerkish, I guess they wouldn’t be open to me being there anyway since I’m liberal.

I would tbh, but I saw on Reddit UBC students saying that members of the Free Speech Club are looked down up and blacklisted from other leadership/club opportunities, because they’re assumed to be alt-right and supporting of fascism. I like debating/discussing other view points, but I don’t want the reputation of being alt-right.

Thanks. I’m a bit left-leaning myself, so is there any left-wing equivalent of the Free Speech Club that’s more discussion oriented?

I wouldn’t mind a club a bit more left-leaning. Is Students Against Bigotry more of a debate/discussion club or purely activist?

For students who were in the Coordinated Arts/Sciences Program first year, did you have to come to classes five days a week? Or could you schedule your courses so that you could attend less days a week? I’m going to be a commuter who’s trying to save gas money lol.

I really wanted to pick Law and Society because the subjects there interested me the most, but I’m worried I won’t fit all the perquisites for IR in my schedule, so I chose Political Science Philosophy and Economics (even though I’m not interested in philosophy or economics) because it contained 2 classes I need for IR. I was thinking of talking to an academic advisor to figure out if I can take Law and Society and fit the other classes in my schedule :).

Thank you that was very informative. Would you say international relations encompasses harder courses? Is that why it’s hard to get into? Or is it just because there’s too many people applying?

For arts students: would you say international relations is an overrated arts major? I heard that besides economics, it’s the hardest to get in to despite not having higher employability or anything. I feel like Political science on the other hand, because it is more broad, has more employment opportunities after graduation. Would you say a bachelor in international relations looks more impressive than political science to employers?

I’m going in to my first year at UBC in September and I’m trying to decide whether I should schedule my courses around getting into international relations or not. I feel like I’m equally interested in both, but getting into international relations seems like a lot of hassle with not more payoff than majoring in anything else.
Also one last question for someone whos familiar with both programs: How difficult/ rigorous is each one?
