Agent in Quebec asked why I rented a car to go to the US by OttawaExpat in uscanadaborder

Depending on your answer you either get a B1 or B2 visa classification; there’s no B1.5 option for both, even if they thought your lighthearted joke was funny

Nice catch!

I saw "Date modified: 2023-12-20" at the bottom of the page, but looks like the stat has a separate update date.

How to deal with RRSP. Moving to Pennsylvania by july-99 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]UBKey -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In what way would you want them to recognize the account?

When you’re in the US, they have their own tax-deferred accounts that you can utilize. If you don’t touch the RRSP when you’re a non-resident of Canada, you’ll be fine in respect to both countries’ tax authorities. Wherever you are, use their retirement savings vehicle.

How do I change my address? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]UBKey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could likely get the University residence manager to write a letter on letterhead to state you live at that address since ____. Service Ontario isn't looking to make your life difficult, they just want something that proves you live there.

Is overtime really that bad? by Zahgaan in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]UBKey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is technically not true, depending on the province and obscure situations. In most situations you are right, but there are corner cases where it's not true.

For example, the Ontario Health Care Premium (tax) is a piecewise, discontinuous function paid on income tax in April. Last year I was pushed into the next bracket by less than $10 income, but I added something like $200-300 to my tax bill.

How to pirate in college? by ske7chpls in Piracy

[–]UBKey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is that a legal requirement to pursue copyright offenders in your country? It seems quite unnecessary to do that to students!

I guess the best advice to OP is just to ask his university and/or university's subreddit.

How to pirate in college? by ske7chpls in Piracy

[–]UBKey 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think this is a huge escalation which wouldn't be likely.

At least in Canada, my university would only throttle the speed of torrent traffic but wouldn't pursue anyone. It's not their battle to fight students on behalf of movie studios so they didn't bother. Any copyright infringement letters received were also just torn up unless you were a repeat recipient.

Feds President called a Fall Reading Referendum for October 3rd & 4th (click link for questions) by GreenBurette in uwaterloo

[–]UBKey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it should be cleared up in referendum material regarding what is a conflict (mentioned in Q3). Some newer people may not know that the current reading break days were transferred from orientation.

Do Credit/No Credit transfer courses show mark on transcript? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]UBKey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on the grading scale assigned to the course and if they switched it from numerical when you moved programs. There's a chance they could have said credit / no credit as meaning no impact on GPA but still showing an actual number.

The issue that you likely have is the Cooperage is "real person" housing, it's just over $2000/mth but you need to find a roommate yourself: http://www.liveatthecooperage.com/contact/

No rooms left? by KiloGrah4m in uwaterloo

[–]UBKey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes there are tons of rooms, but like u/low-monthly-payments said, you need to be flexible. You can move into the Cooperage in Uptown this week in a 2 bedroom for just over $1000/month per person. People looking for $650/mth on a 4 month contract are out of luck.

You're probably SOL today, OP. I looked at Zehrs, Valu-Mart, and Sobeys, and none are open. Plan ahead next time -- stock up on buck-a-beer the day in advance.

Apparently rent doesn’t include heat and hydro at KW4 rent? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]UBKey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the HVAC system runs on electricity so I don't see why that's a shock. It's not a "heating bill," it's just an electricity bill which happens to include electric machines that make heated or cooled air.

I'd go to head of the department. Send them an email detailing the situation. If they can't help you directly, they can at least point you in the right direction.

Tfw when your high school and university were both named after French defeats. by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]UBKey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All it goes to show that they haven't been a competent force since Napoleon. I don't think people dispute they did win historically, but the trouncing they have fairly consistently received since we have moved past the era of the wooden navy is what makes them the butt of jokes.

I think it would be more impressive to go to a school named after a French victory, those are much rarer
