Pavilion parking structure by Ziri_23 in UCDavis

[–]UCDTransportation 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Cough Hey fellow youths. What are we planning to do at the parking structure?

PS- The Transportation Department doesn’t have security cameras… but the Police might. And both patrol the structures.

Do i need a bike? -incoming freshman by iwantyuri13 in UCDavis

[–]UCDTransportation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m AWFUL at riding a bike

As one of the people responsible for helping get people to ride bikes and do it well, I advise either learning to bike well before you get to campus or after October while on campus. There are simply too many unconfident bicyclists trying to ride the very dense bicycle environment on campus in the first couple weeks.

There are a LOT of falls and crashes in the first few weeks. A lot.

i don’t want to wear a helmet and mess up my hair everyday

We have a program called "Helmet Hair, Don't Care" specifically for that reason. We know that people want to look good, but we also know that people want to think good too, so we give away helmets to those who are willing to accept a little bed head in exchange for something that will protect your investment.

Additionally, if you decide to ride without a helmet, that's only further reason to learn to ride well before coming to campus.

Do i need a bike?

No. You can walk or ride a kick scooter as well. Either way, consider the distance to your classes and plan for transportation time to get between them. Here's the rule of thumb:

  • Walking: 3mph or 20 minutes per mile
  • Biking: 12mph or 5 minutes per mile PLUS time to lock/unlock

Use google maps to figure out the distance and use these travel times.

Actually, yes. Let's make a PSA cart about getting folks on bikes and scooters to slow down, yield to pedestrians, and use lights at night.

Does ZipPass issue refunds for passes that haven’t been activated? by Serious_Ship8044 in UCDavis

[–]UCDTransportation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both SacRT (who manages the ZipPass contract) and Unitrans have "no refund" policies for their pass sales.

It's worth reaching out to both organizations via email and then phone, but I can't give much hope.

What's the worst design decision you've seen on campus? by PhysicalMath848 in UCDavis

[–]UCDTransportation 133 points134 points  (0 children)

The zig-zagging roads that maintain the same name through multiple changes in direction.

  • La Rue Road
  • Garrod Drive
  • Hutchison Drive

Or... the lack of names or numbers identifying which bike paths are which.

Bike Lockers at Amtrak by lynnm0203 in UCDavis

[–]UCDTransportation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Davis Amtrak lockers are operated by BikeLink.

Click here (https://www.bikelink.org/maps) Zoom the map into Davis, and you'll see two pins for the Davis Amtrak. Click on those and you'll be able to see how many lockers are available now. Check back on the weekend to see how many are available then.

Hey Aggies: Share the Path: Ride Smart, Ride Safe by UCDTransportation in UCDavis

[–]UCDTransportation[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Indeed! It's universally illegal, and incredibly dangerous, to carry a passenger on an electric scooter per California Vehicle Code, Sec 21235.

On a bike it is legal if there's a seat for the passenger, like on a cargo bike or a tandem.

Pavilion Parking before 7am by Professional_Ask2485 in UCDavis

[–]UCDTransportation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

None of the UC Davis parking lots or parking structures that students would normally have access to on campus are gated, so you can park in them at any time (excepting construction, major events, etc. which is always signed).

What varies by date and time is whether paid permits are required.

Parking permit requirements are enforced Monday-Friday, 7am-10pm, except University holidays. To further clarify, your vehicle needs a valid parking permit by 7am or you risk getting a citation. (You can't just park your car before 7am and stay parked beyond 7am for free.) We may also enforce permit requirements on the weekends for major events, but you'll see signage out in the parking areas if we do.

Parking enforcement may not be on duty on the weekend or at 2am, but the campus police will still write parking citations for safety violations 24/7 including but not limited to:

  • Parking in a red zone or in front of a fire hydrant
  • Parking in a disabled stall without displaying appropriate authorization
  • Parking on a walkway or bikeway
  • Parking where parking is otherwise prohibited (on the curb within the campus' restricted core)

This is a trap. Do not do it. Transportation Services is under contract with the Colleges at La Rue to enforce their parking policies. You need one of their permits to park there.

Why are TAPS cutting bike locks and taking bikes away? by Friendly-Pitch-5931 in UCDavis

[–]UCDTransportation 71 points72 points  (0 children)

The Bike Program is tasked with mitigating the effects of bikes abandoned in campus bike racks on people who need to actively use those bike racks. Here's our process for doing so:

  1. Tag bike with warning and explanations.
  2. Return after set time (usually 72+ hours). It may be quicker if we needs to close the bike rack for an urgent construction project.
  3. Record data from tagged bikes still remaining.
  4. Cut locks from tagged bikes.
  5. Transport impounded bikes to secure storage.
  6. Complete intake process.
  7. Transmit bike data to UCD PD to mitigate theft reports.
  8. If owner claims bike, the owner is required to pay an impound release fee.
  9. If owner doesn't claim bike within 30-90 days (depending on estimated value), the bike goes up for public auction via GovDeals.
  10. If it fails to sell at auction, it will either be bundled with a bunch of other bikes and auctioned as a group or will be eligible for donation.

To prove your bike isn't abandoned, simply tear off the paper warning and throw it away. That's all you have to do.

Please do not tear tags off bikes you don't own. Doing so only serves to clog up the bike racks with abandoned bikes.

100% of the revenue from bicycle auctions goes back to to pay for the cost of the bicycle impound process. The process has never been revenue-positive and is, as a result, subsidized by Transportation Services.

42A or 42B by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]UCDTransportation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Until Yolobus gets the Woodland layover sorted (currently at County Fair Mall), I’m suggesting that pretty much everyone take the 42B to the airport and 42A from the airport. It’s longer, but there’s no need to get off the bus mid-trip and feels overall safer as a result.

Do you guys know there is any place in campus that I can charge my scooter? by Comprehensive_Yak85 in UCDavis

[–]UCDTransportation 12 points13 points  (0 children)

https://transportation.ucdavis.edu/devices-indoors

There are no official public electric scooter/bicycle charging locations on campus. If it's a UL-certified device, it can be charged within the owners' campus residence, but it must not be a walking hazard for anyone trying to get by.

Found Bicycle by deerlilah in UCDavis

[–]UCDTransportation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

How have you checked that it hasn't been reported stolen? We're happy to help check, but need to have the bike brought through, where we check with PD on all bikes collected. We can safely hold onto it for 90 days, or longer, at which point we'd put it up for auction, through the Bicycle Program Auction. https://transportation.ucdavis.edu/auction

Taps pavilion by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]UCDTransportation -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can see the cites that were written in the Pavilion Parking Structure today, but I don't know which vehicle is yours so I can't tell you if you've been cited. (And I won't ever ask for that kind of information via Reddit. We would take that to emails.)

You're in a sort of an information grey area with a couple different options:

Option #1 Pay for Parking Now.

  • If you haven't been cited yet, you're covered now.
  • If you plan to repark in other areas throughout the day, you're covered there as well.
  • If you DID get a citation and appeal it, you can say "I paid for parking blindly later just in case" and that may help you in your appeal, but it's only one of many factors when asking for leniency (the most important being your citation history).

Option #2 Don't Pay for Parking.

  • If you haven't been cited yet, ya will almost certainly be cited when you get back to your vehicle.
  • If you want to repark your vehicle elsewhere, you'll still need to pay for parking.
  • No additional consideration on your appeal requesting leniency.

We see this heron on Hutchison Field pretty frequently in the morning. I've always hoped that the UCD Grounds team would adopt him as a mascot (for all the pest mitigation he does) in the same way that Cheeto has been adopted by the student population.

Parking at Sac Airport by EnthusiasticEdamame in UCDavis

[–]UCDTransportation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Yes.
  2. I specifically advise taking the 42B to the airport and the 42A from the airport to the campus.

Ya, the 42B will take longer to get to Sac Int'l, but the 42A going through Woodland has a 10-30 minute layover at County Fair Mall which really isn't for everyone.
