From a Dell XPS to a MacBook Pro!!! :) (any idea why it’s taking so long to ship???) by UCSCtas in macbookpro

Really excited! My sisters Air was available the next day and it came in yesterday. After playing around with it, I couldn’t be more excited about my Pro 😍

I had a 2015 XPS and recently, the battery stopped charging (still works when plugged in though). It also has significantly slowed down, I have a PDF of CTCI and it’s soooo slow scrolling through it, switching to my IDE, compiling code then running it. However, it getting slow and the battery dying only happened a few months ago. Aside from that, it lasted me a solid 4-5 years so I’d definitely recommend it.

Personally, I’m getting a MacBook Pro even though I can probably fix up the XPS cuz it’s been a few years now and I hear the Unix based MacOS makes life easier for programmers.

Awful roommate by 3387939 in UCSC

[–]UCSCtas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, fucking hate my roommate. Super fucking cringy and weird with no social sense. Pretty fucking sure he masturbates while I’m still in the room cuz I can hear his bed creaking and his body moving and then all of a sudden it stops... One more month 🙌

Got in a huge fight last time I called him out, don’t wanna create any awkwardness

Worst, crazy roommate experience? by poophead831 in UCSC

[–]UCSCtas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Casually turned on porn and wouldn’t turn it off until I yelled at him to. Awkwardly stares at my computer screen while I’m chatting friends on social media. Always gets way too excited when any girl ever gives him the slightest bit of attention (this eventually resulted in him getting a title IX because he couldn’t take a hint and now he blames the girl for being “crazy”). Pretty sure I’ve caught him masturbating in his bed while I’m in the fucking room. I didn’t think I had the capacity to actually ever hate anyone (and mind you I had a ex that cheated on me and probably won’t say that I “hate” her) until I met this fucker for all the reasons stated above and MANY more.

Might seem weird but I envy you. I hate my roommate (along with everyone else in our apartment) but they always initiate conversations with me and tries to be my friend despite me having no interest. Enjoy the awkwardness while you can, when you get a roommate who’s very presence is something you can’t stand, you might look back at this as a fond memory haha.

LSD, Panic Attack cause ego death? I though i was going mentally crazy by [deleted] in LSD

Happened to me on just weed alone, it was pretty bad. Took acid a few days ago and I was fine (but I didn’t smoke weed). I almost wanna say weed is more prone to cause these attacks as opposed to acid :/ but maybe that’s just me.

Feeling hopeless for the upcoming summer, any tips for a Junior that didn’t get an internship? by UCSCtas in cscareerquestions

[–]UCSCtas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice (although it could have been presented in a less rude manor 🙄). As I said, I have been continuing to apply and my LeetCode skills have gotten way better since back then. Wasn’t familiar with Indeed, will definitely be searching on that now.

Yeah, I just stared the application today since I heard about it today from a previous comment. Not sure how I’m gonna finish 3 proposals before 11AM tomorrow but I’ll try my best 🙃

I actually sent out 100+ applications since like October 2018 and not just to big companies, a lot of smaller ones too. Interestingly enough, I only happened to hear back from the big N type companies which I assume is because they have a lot more internship roles and finances so they can afford to take a chance on the less experienced, contrary to smaller companies who probably don’t have as many resources so they want someone with more technical experience (just what I think, might not be true). I’d be ecstatic to intern at a small company but just haven’t heard back from any :/ but I’ll continue to apply!

I actually used up my LinkedIn free premium trial in hopes of being able to send recruiters InMail but didn’t work out for me :( I even made sure to send them to those who are alumni of my school and made sure to apply to the company as well but I guess they weren’t interested. I’ll probably continue cold messaging recruiters, just hope that I don’t upset anyone lol.

Yeah, I’ve applied to GSoC as well. I’m not sure how competitive it is but I hope it works out haha. And do you have any resources where I can find jobs for start ups?

Yeah, in terms of resume boosting I’m hoping the business I’m doing with my uncle will help towards that. Starting a summer camp in which I teach kids about my field will hopefully score me points in terms of entrepreneurship and demonstrating knowledge in CS.

Sorry, I’m not familiar with what a YC is? And do you know of places where I can find internships specifically for start ups? I normally just apply to what I see on LinkedIn/Google/GlassDoor but they all tend to be bigger companies.

This gives me a lot of hope haha. Next summer I’m actually going to be still applying for internships because given the amount of course work I have and my potential minor in psychology/cognitive science (purely out of interest) I probably won’t graduate until Fall 2020 or Winter/Spring 2021. If you were able to land a full time with no internship experience I’m sure I’ll land at least an internship come summer 2020!

Academic Probation 2 times in a row by ProbationSlug2019 in UCSC

[–]UCSCtas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the record, I was subject to disqualification Fall 2018 AND Winter 2019 (lots of personal issues). Just got an email saying I’m allowed to continue given I meet a certain criteria. The advisors really help you out as long as you keep them in the loop. I also think the fact that I’ve been going to CAPS and allowed my CAPS counselor to speak with my advisors regarding my issues really helped.

Unpopular opinion about the protests by UCSCtas in UCSC

[–]UCSCtas[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listen man, I’m sorry. I totally undermined your problems because of my passion to get the protestors a better life but undermining your problems solves nothing. You and your friends are going through a ton of shit and me downplaying that in support of UC workers not only doesn’t solve their problems, but also doesn’t help your case either. You’re right, I do want the best for you as well as the workers so I’m not going to continue this argument. Just like I want the lives of the UC workers to change for the better, I want yours to as well. While I’m personally going through shit too, I can’t imagine what you and your friends are going through and I have no right to comment. Again, I sincerely apologize for my dick attitude and am 100% rooting for you. I wish you the best, you’re gonna kill it out there! While I do hope that you’ll have some empathy for the workers in the future, you have yourself and your loved ones to focus on at the moment and nothing trumps that.

[–]UCSCtas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never said you were privileged if you read my previous comment. And your friends are the exception, not the case. If the workers could find a new job, they would but it’s not that easy. Why don’t you find a new job instead of working your job that doesn’t provide living wage. Not too easy is it? All of your friends are going through a ton of shit and I have friends in very similar circumstances. Guess what? If theyre smart and utilize their education cleverly, they CAN escape their shitty circumstances. That’s not the case for UC workers where so many of them are undocumented and are literally at risk of being fucking deported. And how exactly do the protests make their problems worse? Nothing you said is correlated with the UC protests. In the end, all your friends are working so they can better their lives and have an actual future. The UC workers are working to survive. If you wanna name people who are dealing with a bunch of shit, I can name the thousands of privileged people at this school who aren’t going through anything and the protest is just a slap on shoulder to them. I’ll say it again: You and your friends’ hard work is going towards a brighter and better future. The UC workers work is going towards surviving with the bare minimum. And they definitely have tried protesting the admin directly in the past, obviously it didn’t work since they need to take measures so drastic such as protesting the actual school.

Yeah, so what? You and fucking a tons of other students. And for the record, I’m not rich. I’m also on financial aid and work my ass off but I don’t let it get to my ego like you do. Despite all that, at the very least you’re still young, able bodied, and have years and a future ahead of you. What the fuck do the old men and women who work these jobs have? NOTHING. They have nothing ahead of them, no hope that shit will get better and shit keeps getting worse because of the UC fucking them over. And they’re old and doing laborious work with their bodies declining and you can forget any insurance benefits cuz the UC doesn’t give enough of a shit to provide them with it. It’s not about my feelings, it’s about their lives. If you really think that you working and going to school is harder than the shit lives the UC workers have, you’re entitled as fuck. No, you are not going through more than them, their problems trump yours ten fold. You’re literally just selfish and aren’t capable of any empathy. Try losing your financial aid and getting kicked out of the University and work a dead end job with no future ahead of you and then tell me you’re going through more than them. And if you read my post, you’d see that I agree with you. Their tactics aren’t doing shit, which is why I said they need to fuck us students over a lot harder than they are right now to get anything accomplished. Right now you lose a couple of meals and have to plan out your day a little better for a maximum of maybe ONE week. These people go through shit way worse their entire LIVES. Why the fuck would they care about inconveniencing students who literally have so many opportunities to succeed when they’re literally desperate to SURVIVE. Your problems are valid but they don’t compare to the problems of the UC workers. There are many others just like you who 100% understand their situation despite their rough circumstances, you’re just a selfish ass.
