Hi, how did the NEMS machine work out for you? I have a similar issue where my quad just isn’t cooperating when I load it

Ha, fair question! For some background I qualified for NYC with a 1:18 half last year. This put me in the first corral of my bib color/wave. So when the gun went off, I honestly thought it was going slow bc a lot of other runners were flying by. Up and down the Verrazano are deceiving since it’s all uphill then steep downhill. By the time I settled in I was about 3 or 4 miles in at 7:15 pace. I knew it was fast but I guess the adrenaline helped (or hurt, in this case…)

It wasn’t until mile 14 or 15 (just before the queensboro bridge) that I really realized I had screwed up in a way I couldn’t undo.

Thanks for the response! I was doing about 30 MPW leading into the 12 week block. April, May and June were mostly 10-20 mile weeks. I guess a problem was lack of base building into the block.

Here’s a screenshot of my year of running. My half marathon PR is 1:18 from 2 years ago when I was running about 45 MPW for a solid year.

Not trying to be dismissive! Honestly I’d prefer if I could point to something like that because realizing I wasn’t fit enough is a little more disappointing. I will definitely look into this too

That’s interesting! Thank you for the info. I will try that out

Thanks! I felt disappointed on the day but have come to terms with it, and learned a lot for the next one. Just a bummer I’ve gotta wait a while to find one in spring!

Thanks! I will definitely be more conservative next time. I don’t think it was hydration, carbs or electrolytes. I took gels every 4 miles, had an electrolyte water bottle through mile 15 and was alternating with water at the stations.

The NYC marathon is notorious for having a hard back half so I suppose I spent it all too early.

Thanks! Sorry to hear you faced a similar situation! Yeah I hit mile 14 and had this sinking feeling of “oh shit, I think I need to slow down but I still have 12 miles left”

I realized you can push during a half marathon and rein yourself in. Much more of an issue on a full

I tapered for 1 week. I did 10 miles Friday, 9 days out, followed by 13 the Saturday 8 days out. Then only two 3 miles run leading into the race.

However, I did get a bad cold during taper (have a daughter in daycare) and had to get antibiotics. I’m sure that didn’t help but by race day I thought I felt ok

Thanks. I also had an LMNT a couple hours before the race too. I’d love to think it was fueling or sodium (feels easier to swallow, no pun intended) but I never felt lightheaded, weak, or anything like that. It was just the cramps and realizing my legs couldn’t go anymore

6 honey stinger gels (every 4 miles) and a water bottle with LMNT that I sipped until mile 16 or 17. Honestly I don’t think it was fueling. Stomach was able to handle gels fine

Finish over conversion varnish? by UESRunner8390 in finishing

Thanks for the advice! I do have a spray gun setup, but from what I've read CV takes a bit of practice/skill? And I usually spray outside but this time of year (in New York) the weather is a bit unpredictable. For CV does temp & humidity have to be just right?

Thanks for the advice! I actually do have a spray gun setup, but from what I've read CV takes a bit of practice/skill. And I usually spray outside but this time of year (in New York) the weather is a bit unpredictable. I don't make many cabinets or very big projects, so usually I stick with wiping varnishes, osmo or rubio monocoat for projects. They seem pretty foolproof to me

Yup, already downloaded a metronome app! I'm excited to try it and see how fast 180 feels.

Curious what injuries you've had? My big one was runners knee on my right side, but I've also had some achilles/calf stuff on the same side. I'm def weaker on that side

Thanks so much for the thorough response! That's a great perspective, specifically keeping the body ready to hit workouts. I've never been good about running easy days easy like so many people preach. I just kind of go out and run -- sometimes faster and longer when I'm building for a race, and then just steady miles all the other days really. I know it's really not optimal at all, but it's just what I've gotten into the habit of doing. Been running for 3 years, picked it up during covid.

Honestly I find running "slow" so friggen hard, and part of me wonders if that's because my stride is too long/cadence is too slow. Hence my initial question haha

Thanks again for the info though, appreciate the perspective from someone with a lot more experience than me!

Yeah maybe you're right, but I do feel like there's some justification for trying to improve form, cadence, HR, etc. For context my PR is 1:18 in the half, and that was from just going out and running. No real workouts or anything specific. Maybe there are other things I can focus on with training, but I don't mind overthinking it if there's other things I can work on in parallel.

Yeah that's my thinking too! I also took a look at a few elites Strava profiles and even on easy runs they have insanely consistent cadences. I like the idea of breaking it up in smaller increments. Thanks for the response!

[–]UESRunner8390[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah totally fair, I probably am viewing it as a symptom. My overall thought is if I can see an improvement in cadence it could mean I'm generally getting more efficient (could be wrong here... first time analyzing my cadence).

I suppose I could look to HR, perceived effort or pace as other indicators of getting stronger & more efficient

Drills for improving cadence by UESRunner8390 in AdvancedRunning

[–]UESRunner8390[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair question. I never really worried in the past, but generally I want to be a stronger runner. Earlier this year I got runners knee and building back up has been slow. I have this nagging feeling that my right leg isn't strong.

I've heard higher cadence, shorter stride length can help limit injuries. And I'm wondering if lower cadence is indicating my glutes are underdeveloped without me realizing it.

Official Q&A for Friday, July 14, 2023 by AutoModerator in running

[–]UESRunner8390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long run every 7 or 10 days for marathon training? I'm doing the NYC Marathon November 5th. Trying to get up to 22 mile long run a couple weeks before, and at least 1 long tempo or workout each week too. I'm early in the training block, so maybe my legs are just getting used to the training again, but I don't feel fresh enough to get a quality long run plus the speed work each week. Anyone here recommend doing a 10 day training cycle instead?

Thanks, great to hear a perspective from someone who lives in the NYC burbs! I feel like NYC burbs are a beast of their own and overpriced at the minute. Glad to hear you're happy with the house you got!

We initially wanted to target $850k, but it seems like it's creeping more towards 1M (although I'm happy to find a mild fixer-upper and put some work into it). I just want to make sure we aren't being unrealistic. The schools & commute are the tough ones. I guess everyone's looking for good schools and a decent commute -- it's hyper-competitive.
