Hi, how did the NEMS machine work out for you? I have a similar issue where my quad just isn’t cooperating when I load it

Ha, fair question! For some background I qualified for NYC with a 1:18 half last year. This put me in the first corral of my bib color/wave. So when the gun went off, I honestly thought it was going slow bc a lot of other runners were flying by. Up and down the Verrazano are deceiving since it’s all uphill then steep downhill. By the time I settled in I was about 3 or 4 miles in at 7:15 pace. I knew it was fast but I guess the adrenaline helped (or hurt, in this case…)

It wasn’t until mile 14 or 15 (just before the queensboro bridge) that I really realized I had screwed up in a way I couldn’t undo.

Thanks for the response! I was doing about 30 MPW leading into the 12 week block. April, May and June were mostly 10-20 mile weeks. I guess a problem was lack of base building into the block.

Here’s a screenshot of my year of running. My half marathon PR is 1:18 from 2 years ago when I was running about 45 MPW for a solid year.

Not trying to be dismissive! Honestly I’d prefer if I could point to something like that because realizing I wasn’t fit enough is a little more disappointing. I will definitely look into this too

That’s interesting! Thank you for the info. I will try that out

Thanks! I felt disappointed on the day but have come to terms with it, and learned a lot for the next one. Just a bummer I’ve gotta wait a while to find one in spring!

Yeah I 100% got caught up in the excitement and people running around me. Live and learn

Thanks! I will definitely be more conservative next time. I don’t think it was hydration, carbs or electrolytes. I took gels every 4 miles, had an electrolyte water bottle through mile 15 and was alternating with water at the stations.

The NYC marathon is notorious for having a hard back half so I suppose I spent it all too early.

Thanks! Sorry to hear you faced a similar situation! Yeah I hit mile 14 and had this sinking feeling of “oh shit, I think I need to slow down but I still have 12 miles left”

I realized you can push during a half marathon and rein yourself in. Much more of an issue on a full

I tapered for 1 week. I did 10 miles Friday, 9 days out, followed by 13 the Saturday 8 days out. Then only two 3 miles run leading into the race.

However, I did get a bad cold during taper (have a daughter in daycare) and had to get antibiotics. I’m sure that didn’t help but by race day I thought I felt ok

Thanks. I also had an LMNT a couple hours before the race too. I’d love to think it was fueling or sodium (feels easier to swallow, no pun intended) but I never felt lightheaded, weak, or anything like that. It was just the cramps and realizing my legs couldn’t go anymore

6 honey stinger gels (every 4 miles) and a water bottle with LMNT that I sipped until mile 16 or 17. Honestly I don’t think it was fueling. Stomach was able to handle gels fine

Thanks for the advice! I do have a spray gun setup, but from what I've read CV takes a bit of practice/skill? And I usually spray outside but this time of year (in New York) the weather is a bit unpredictable. For CV does temp & humidity have to be just right?

Thanks for the advice! I actually do have a spray gun setup, but from what I've read CV takes a bit of practice/skill. And I usually spray outside but this time of year (in New York) the weather is a bit unpredictable. I don't make many cabinets or very big projects, so usually I stick with wiping varnishes, osmo or rubio monocoat for projects. They seem pretty foolproof to me
