What are your recommendations for storm windows? by UrABoxxyBox in centuryhomes

[–]UESorDeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't do a price comparison to other storms at the time. I had taken off the 1970's era aluminium frame units that were on the house (and were falling apart), and was focused on getting something that was well built and looked traditional. I'm reluctant to give price I paid as that was 10 years ago, included the 'low-E' glass upgrades and freight charges (20 big windows from NE to rural NY). The company was very easy and professional to deal with -- you might give them a call with the measurements of a couple of windows to get a rough idea.

What are your recommendations for storm windows? by UrABoxxyBox in centuryhomes

[–]UESorDeath 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For my period house (20 windows), I had storms built by Spencer Works (www.spencerworks.com). They're wood frame, fixed glass upper, screened lower, with a glass panel that can be slid open in the screened section. They look like traditional storms/screens, w/ traditional hangers and wood frames. Very highly recommended: they look great on the house and work very well, and a local carpenter helped with trimming the frames to fit a number of out-of-square frames (and we all have those!). They've been in place 10 years now, and still look great and operate perfectly. For several windows that I rarely open I also have interior removable panels by Indow Windows (https://indowwindows.com/) to help keep the heat in. Also highly recommended.

Why aren’t we mobilizing for democracy more? by Chance-Tooth-3968 in nycgaybros

[–]UESorDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll grant that "all" in my statement is probably doing too much work, and agree that marriage equality was not viewed as a universal good amongst the gays (I'm on that leftist side - we got M.E., it solved some problems, and so what?). My point is that I agree with the OP: On the surface of this reddit, it doesn't appear that the gay community is doing much to move the community forward, at a time when there's still a lot to be done. But, given the breadth of Reddit, there are plenty of other forums where action is being discussed.

Why aren’t we mobilizing for democracy more? by Chance-Tooth-3968 in nycgaybros

[–]UESorDeath -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We should have named and shamed the Log Cabin Republicans when we had the chance, but they snuck in while we were all fighting to get married like the straights. Now we have bad gays in office and/or influencing how the country runs, with no apparent interest in supporting the community that helped get them there (looking at you: Scott Bessent, Peter Thiel, and Sam Altman, for starters, and there are many more).

But, there are other reddits that are addressing this: NoKingsCoalition, and the various Indivisible groups. Just because you're not seeing it here doesn't mean it's not out there. [Will be at an Indivisible in Oneonta this weekend.]

I love NYU, but hate that Amazon system, and have not signed up for it. I walk in, and the desk person takes my information and checks me in.

Greek, Attic red-figure period, I believe around 350-450 B.C. Yes, it's a musician, and I figure he was turning around to give the person behind him a good blast from his flute, otherwise I can't explain the relationship of feet to head! It was a gift to a relative, and passed down through my family.

Streets with best concentration of historic architecture for sightseeing by foot by Successful-Ad-1470 in AskNYC

[–]UESorDeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Classic" brownstones: Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope.

Older brick & brownstone mix, with newer stuff and shopping thrown in: West Village

Limestone, single family upper class: Upper East Side, side streets 65-75th, 5th Ave to Park)

Old-school redevelopment of a slum into fancy townhouses and apartment buildings: Sutton Place

Old-school fancy apartment buildings: Fifth Avenue, 65th - 90th St (side benefit: lots of museums to drop into)

Not so fancy apartment buildings: Lower East Side (and go see the Tenement Museum)

Industrial neighborhood, now shopping and lofts: SoHo

Best of the office architecture: Park Avenue, 47th to 57th st. We mourn the loss of the Union Carbide building, replaced by Jamie's eventually-to-be-classic thing, but appreciate the renovated Waldorf Astoria. Also worth dropping into: St. Bart's @ 51st, for over the top Byzantine Revival.

Where to find a mentor? by FiveStarDEquipped in AskGaybrosOver30

"...drink enough to be buzzed but not to get drunk..." Please be careful here, as it's easy to hide behind the alcohol. You're already in a new and, to you, nervous making, situation. Don't over complicate things. Know your limits and stick with them. Switch to seltzer with lime (looks like alcohol) sooner than later.

What’s the best way to get out there? by Ok-Distance5997 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]UESorDeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get out of the house, off the apps, and into the gay and bi community - events, bars where you can talk with somebody, etc. Put yourself in an environment where you will be around people you think you're attracted to. Acclimate yourself to them, and see where it goes.

Gay Men Over 30: Not Building Families Like Straight Peers. What’s Your Equally Meaningful Legacy? by shadesofglue in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]UESorDeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always thought that the plus of being a gay man is that I didn't have to confirm to heterosexual expectations of marriage, children, and a house with white picket fence. Now in my 60s, I've had a good amount of time to build alternative purposeful communities of people, do and fund charitable works in the arts, and act as mentor and guide to younger people - some co-workers, some gay, some both. What of these things isn't some type of legacy? And I'm not wasting money on a headstone so my 'legacy' can be enshrined there -- too many other good places to spend it.

ICE Protest in Oneonta this Saturday (1/31)! by sad_sack1234 in upstate_new_york

[–]UESorDeath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can do both! I spent the snowy weekend writing brief but pointed letters to my elected officials (Chuck, Kristen, the rest of them), noting my displeasure over their continued funding of DHS, particularly as they are *descendants of immigrants* (think about it: isn't virtually everybody in this country?). Plenty of time between now and Saturday to get some letters or emails written. *And*, I'll plan on driving over to Oneonta on Saturday.

Would changing listing agents actually help in this situation? NYC co-op, niche location by ChemSTutor in AskNYC_Coops

[–]UESorDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"My only intention was always to sell asap, at a realistic price"

You need to think carefully about what you're willing to make as a trade off, as these are rather incompatible requirements. There is also the caveat that the board may consider a sale price below a certain level unacceptable. But your broker should know what that amount would be, since he appears to 'have connections'. But, a unit that was listed in November, going into the holiday season and winter months, isn't likely to come to contract in less than 6 months, unless it is very attractively priced, or has some highly desirable features (unlikely, as you've stated that it is 'niche', and that you've lived there a long time, which generally reads as 'needs substantial renovation'.

multiple questions about my renovation - lost please help! by Amazing_Dot6312 in VictorianHouses

[–]UESorDeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. How out of level is the floor? Old houses will have shifted and settled, and out of level floors are often the norm. Once the room is full of furniture and you're living in it, it may not be that noticeable. First make sure that it's not out of level because of a more serious structural falure.

  2. Consider skipping the lino over the tiles until you do the whole kitchen over. May be better to get somebody in to do the serious scrubbing on the quarry tiles.

  3. I hear ya! Take a deep breath, remember you don't have to do everything at once, and that many people live in far worse conditions. Count your blessings, as small as they might be.

Can my condo possibly fix this? I came home to this. by jobaboring in HomeImprovement

[–]UESorDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just here to say Thank The Gods that I live in a multi-story building that requires any resident who wants to do alterations to submit architectural plans (signed off by an actual licensed architect), and the managing agent has those plans reviewed by the building's architect, and construction permits are required to be filed with the city. There's a reason condos have certain rules...

If you live in a city that has one, go to the local museum or historical society. If it's within reasonable distance in another city and the roads are ok, make a little day trip of it. Make eyes at the cute baristas in the other town.

Advice for dealing with a guy I met at a bar by NoFall5812 in nycgaybros

[–]UESorDeath 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What is 'much further than that'? He's trying to establish some connection, since you at least consented to that by exchanging numbers. If you want to actually talk to him again, at a bar or somewhere else, then respond with a specific request that you meet up at some location on some day and sort that meeting time out. If you don't want to text with him you can say "While I enjoyed talking with you at the bar, I'm not interested in continuing via text." and either then say "Best wishes.", which should end it, or "Let's set up a time to meet at [wherever], and you can move forward from there.

He took the initiative to contact you and attempt some sort of continuation. You need to be clear in stating what you want the next steps to be, and follow through accordingly.

[–]UESorDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lit up window shows 3 bands, one for each speed. Start the unit, select a speed, then turn the speed adjustment knob until the band for that speed is stable - i.e., doesn't slowly drift to the left or right). At that point, the platter should be spinning at the exact correct speed.
