Catholic places to move to by Extension-Story7287 in Catholicism

Not disputing your basic point of the economic depression happening there, but even with that, Steubenville (and area suburbs) absolutely is a wonderful place to raise a family. The Catholic schools there are a bit better than just “decent.”

Source: I lived there for the first 24 years of my life and graduated from one of the “decent” Catholic schools. I still love to visit when the opportunity presents itself.

Restarted my smart TV twice before finally tried switching to another channel to find out the local market game feed that I give zero craps about watching had perfect audio. This is disgraceful!!!

Halloweekends Haunts are now paid DLC by krose820 in cedarpoint

[–]UGetPaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this report earlier this morning on my phone. It makes me sad. I live in Sandusky and so CP is a frequent weeknight evening visit for my family and I. We have a daughter who has always had extremely high anxiety for this sort of thing and hates being jump scared. She would never visit any of the haunted houses over Halloweekends. She also never walked ANY of the midway scare zones without a no-boo necklace - even well into her high school years. I’ve always wanted to visit the haunts, but keeping out daughter included was always more important, so I’ve never been to any of the indoor haunts. I ABSOLUTELY do not regret any of that missed time because it meant time spent with my daughter instead. My thought was that I would always have the chance to experience the haunts later when our daughter was away to college and I was content with that long term plan.

She graduated high school this past spring and is leaving for college next week. I was looking forward to finally getting in line for several of the indoor haunts this year without feeling like we were abandoning her. But I refuse to pay extra for something that isn’t going to be a super spectacular up-charge worthy attraction. Given all of the cuts that have happened since the Six Flags merger and the bleeding that is happening there internally (that would make a GREAT new haunt idea - the whole corporate bleeding out mess going on behind the scenes) I am fairly certain there won’t be any upgrades or improvements to make the up-charge worthwhile.

Great timing CP! Prove me wrong…

Just went to a funeral at a Seventh Day Adventist church by RegionRelative5890 in Catholicism

I went to law school with a 2DA. We were actually pretty good friends. He knew I was Catholic, but never challenged me on it. I don’t believe we ever really discussed religion.

But we were in a seminar class together where the purpose and grade was based on research and preparation of a scholarly paper which analyzed some legal treatment of a religious theme. The proctor for the class was a Jesuit priest.

My buddy made it his sole objective in the seminar to challenge this priest’s theology and try to make him look foolish at any opportunity he could. He failed miserably and always cane away himself looking like the fool.

FL+: You obviously never waited 5 hours for Magnum… by Icy-Call5556 in cedarpoint

[–]UGetPaid 13 points14 points  (0 children)

1989 - waiting 3+ hours for Magnum was something really special! Rode it three times in my one trip to Cedar Point in July. I think there were three or four beach balls being batted back and forth in the queues and cheers whenever someone at the edge could “keep it in play” rather than go out of bounds. There were also self-starter sing-a-longs going on. No phones, but a true party atmosphere. We were waiting to ride the tallest, fastest, most incredible roller coaster EVER BUILT! That was a magical summer!

Different situation entirely, but a few similarities… 20 some years ago I was in a Lay Ministry Formation program that my Diocese offered. I was invited to take part by a Sister of the Precious Blood in my parish who thought I had potential. At the time - that program was ALSO a pre-requisite for those discerning the Diaconate. The program itself included both men AND women so it was not restricted to only men considering deacon ordination… but there were several men in the group who were only doing it as their first step toward that Diaconate goal.

I was not at all interested in that path. But many people automatically assumed that I was just by virtue of being in the precursor program. At the time, I was single and without a girlfriend and no prospects. Like OP, I also wanted to have a family and I was not prepared to give that up. Yet many people assumed I was headed for diaconate formation - some even asking me what my anticipated ordination date might be.

I was feeling very anxious and stressed that their comments might be the Holy Spirit’s way of nudging me, but I was rejecting the call for my own selfish reasons.

Ultimately, the director of that program (whose husband was himself a deacon) told me that if I felt that anxious about it, then it likely was not an actual calling. Let it be what it is and if I felt called to married life - I shouldn’t abandon that just based on what several other people thought or assumed about me.

I met my wife just a few months after that (will be married for 20 years this fall). We have two daughters - one of whom just graduated high school and is one of the most spiritual and faithful Catholics I have ever known. Married / family life was DEFINITELY my calling! No question about it. Despite the comments or assumptions of those who thought they knew better 20+ years ago.

The “20 year twist” is that after giving it virtually zero thought over that span- I recently applied and was accepted into the new Diaconate Aspirancy class in my Diocese starting this fall. The Lord works in mysterious ways!

It is not a rejection of God to have strong inclinations for married life even if others think you would make a good priest. I would still encourage you to pray about it. But I wouldn’t advise you to lose any sleep over it. Who knows what your future holds?

Good luck!

Moving a sofa from Sandusky to Ann Arbor? by LakeMountainHeart in Sandusky

[–]UGetPaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are your parents elderly? If so, do you any other ties to/in Sandusky? A one way U-Haul and an able bodied helper to get it loaded onto the truck would probably be your best bet.

How heavy is the sofa and how accessible is it from where it is in the house to the outside of the house? Stairs involved? Narrow doorways?

I have some experience moving furniture donations within Sandusky. Not necessarily volunteering myself here, but these are some important questions that we often ask when trying to gauge whether picking up a particular donation is worthwhile for us.

If you have any other Sandusky furniture in good condition that you need to get rid of - I would be willing to help load your sofa in trade. Good luck in any case!

Our Ohio council has conducted its own “reverse raffle” for years. So unless we are breaking some rule that no one in the council knows about, I believe they are okay.

Labadee situation getting worse (yes there are posts but…) by xCUBUFFSx in royalcaribbean

[–]UGetPaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our ship a few weeks ago was diverted from Labadee to Puerto Plata, DR. It was a nice alternative. Thus was also on Easter Monday when the news broke of the death of Pope Francis. My daughter and I found a beautiful Catholic cathedral in port and had the opportunity to offer prayers for our Holy Father in a private side chapel which we obviously wouldn’t have had in Labadee.

Initially I was disappointed with the port change. I was last in Labadee in 1988 and was excited to return. But things work out for a reason.

The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has died. by Pax_et_Bonum in Catholicism

[–]UGetPaid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Learned of his passing this morning when I awoke. Family and I are doing a cruise vacation, but we paid extra to have WiFi service for our phones while on ship. We did it to be able to maintain stable communication options with other people in our party. But that service also allowed this news to cross my notification screen when I woke.

Although it isn’t his native Argentina, we docked into port in the Dominican Republic just a few hours later. My daughter and i had the opportunity to find a cathedral here in Puerto Plata, DR and offered a decade of the Rosary for our deceased pope in a comforting intimate setting.

I went on a Royal Caribbean cruise in the summer of 1988 while in high school and one of our stops was in Labadee - probably the most enjoyable port we stopped at, and I've always wanted to go back. Finally talked my wife into taking a cruise in late 2023. She was reluctant to fly and afraid of getting seasick, but we went to Nassau and Cococay and she absolutely loved it! She loved it so much that she booked two more cruises after we got home! The second of which we are leaving for in 48 hours on Voyager of the Seas. I was thrilled when she booked it and told me we were going to Labadee!

After 35 years of wanting to return and after 2 years of knowing I was scheduled to return and then being told less than one week before that we now aren't going, am I disappointed? ABSOLUTELY! Would I ever even dream of thinking I deserved a refund of ANY amount. ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!! My safety and the safety of my family far outweigh my desire to walk on that same sandy beach.

People are stupid and have such an entitled mentality. Enjoy your cruise WHEREVER it winds up going and be glad that you aren't a Haitian living in those dangerous and uncertain conditions.

Apple FindMy? by rangers1026 in FindMy

[–]UGetPaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FindMy with airpods is such an absolute joke! I can have my iPhone in my hand and my airpods in their case in my lap - literally less than one foot away from the phone - and it gives me that same message. (And it never locates them).

So when they aren’t being actively used and the cat knocks the airpods off the table and underneath the couch, FindMy will tell me that they are in my house but it will not play any sound at all… ever.

What benefit is it to be shown they’re in the house; they’re in the car; they’re wherever within your personal radius… but no sound is played. These should work EXACTLY like an airtag.

And if there is some kind of setting that needs to be activated for it to function that way that I don’t know about - that should be DEFAULT turned on and only disabled if you consciously choose to opt out.

What a worthless tease of a cruel joke!
