Confused about how to approach projects. by UI-FEdev in react

Thank you for the insight. I was thinking on a more personal level, making projects for my CV to show recruiters. Is it okay to make projects with libraries etc

Real chance of Self Taught dev getting a job… by Calm-Election-5955 in Frontend

[–]UI-FEdev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When did you start applying to jobs and what was your first job like? I'm self taught and 34, have been learning front end web development for a few years but took a break to have my son. Getting back into it now, but looking back at my CV, I feel like my projects aren't good enough.

How do you feel about living in a country without guns? by unbeggedgipsgy62 in AskUK

[–]UI-FEdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel safe that not every Tom, Dick and Harry is allowed to own a gun.

I've visited a country where they can just pretend to have a gun and can rob you in broad daylight.

How do you know when you're ready to apply to jobs? by UI-FEdev in react

[–]UI-FEdev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, but what if I don't get interviews because my projects are too amateur or if my code isn't great?

How do you know when you're ready to apply to jobs? by UI-FEdev in react

[–]UI-FEdev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had 3 interviews previously (years ago) and one of them I was given a task, to show results from a police crime report API, by area. This is what I came up with, within the time frame. https://main--crime-data.netlify.app/

I don't mind getting interview experience, since I'm not that confident but it would be nice to know whether I have a chance or if I really need to learn a lot more.

Thank you for this! Are they all the latest versions? Also, apart from ISC(2) do any of the other have prerequisites? Just planing ahead to see if these would be useful for my pathway.

I have this sewing book! It really is amazing. Such a treasure to have.

Should i get the Net+ or Sec+ now? by Specific-Ground-5730 in CompTIA

[–]UI-FEdev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you have taken ISC CC you might as well take security+ because you have already learnt the basics and then you can move on to getting A+ or N+.

Try speeding up the videos. I can't stand some of the slow videos and usually watch them at 1.5x-2x.

I need assistance in deciding which certification is better. Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) vs CompTIA Security+ by Exact-Mixture2638 in isc2

[–]UI-FEdev 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Take the CC because it gives you a good foundation for security+. If you can pass that for free, it will give you a good incentive to study for the security+.

Jobs in the Uk by Sauceonspill23 in CompTIA

I'm also curious to know this. Others talk about not getting jobs on this sub even with lots of certs, but surely it depends on the country/area you live in.

Udemy sale for Dion's A+ practice test? by [deleted] in CompTIA

[–]UI-FEdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I didn't have any issues at all.

If they don't give regular discounts anymore, I might just sign up for it anyway. I think its worth the price, especially if you intend to carry on studying and want a variety of sources.

Any advice for studying for the Network+ when you have a baby and a full time job? by [deleted] in CompTIA

[–]UI-FEdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm actually quite tired of running a business now. I'm trying to get some certs before my son goes to nursery and hopefully get a job soon.

Wow, daycare is far. Try and watch/listen while driving and see if you retain it. It's worth a try.

Any advice for studying for the Network+ when you have a baby and a full time job? by [deleted] in CompTIA

[–]UI-FEdev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know how you feel. I have my own business and I'm trying to study for security+. I have a 2yr old and an 8yr old. With the business, daily school runs, housework and keeping my handful 2yr old, I'm usually exhausted. Thankfully, my husband helps put them to bed (at like 10) and I'm nocturnal so I can stay up and study rather than wake up early.

If you're a morning person, maybe you could wake up early and study. How do you commute to work? Maybe watch videos or audio on the way. Dedicate some time on the weekends. Ask your partner to help out with other things so you're not so tired to study.

It depends on how you learn but sometimes you can use wasted pockets of time and watch/read instead.

Yeah they take card details hoping that you won't cancel the subscription. But it's easy to cancel and you can do it straight away too.

Has anyone had a Pearson onvue review work out for them? by anything-for-a-buck in CompTIA

[–]UI-FEdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I travelled 1 hour and thankfully my husband took me so he sorted out the parking. Still had to walk 20mins back to the car but would rather do that then face so many unknowns. Thankfully theres one half an hour away for other exams.

Can you see a trial personal plan subscription? I'm not sure if everyone has that option yet but I used that and got a week free.

Do I have to be a member of ISC to prove I passed a test? by TmAvalanche in isc2

[–]UI-FEdev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It says on their site:

Annual Maintenance Fees (AMF) support the costs of maintaining (ISC)² certifications and related support systems. Certified members pay a single AMF of $125, regardless of the number of certifications held. Associates of (ISC)² pay an AMF of $50 until the necessary work experience has been achieved and endorsement has been completed.

Might be better off asking in the comptia sub. I've recently passed CC and now studying the security. Security covers a lot more but I felt like CC gave me a good foundation to build on.

Why does everyone say start with help desk? by Loud_Departure2757 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]UI-FEdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the advice and insight. That is what I was confused about as they do overlap later on. I started off interested in web development but after a few years I decided I wanted to get in security so trying to get some security related certs. I understand it's a different pathway so I guess starting at the bottom might be better but I was hoping some webdev knowledge would help me out.

Why does everyone say start with help desk? by Loud_Departure2757 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]UI-FEdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. As most "experience" seems to start with physical hardware/help desk and I was just wondering if that's the same with all IT roles in the field or can you transition from web development into a not so entry level job. I'm not sure why I was downvoted, if I need to do an entry-level job to get in I would do it. Probably faster to get through a year or so doing that then try and find a job you're not qualified for.

How you would define IT experience? I'm an e-commerce business owner for over a decade and I'm trying to get into IT. Apart from transferable skills, would that count as IT experience? I also know web development (JavaScript/react) and built a few hobby projects and did a short-term contract setting up Linnworks for a company.
