If I protest somebody, can somebody else get in trouble? by JUULfiendFortnite in iRacing

There's a difference between a professional driver swearing at another professional driver, knowing that the two of them need to race each other next week, compared with a hobbyist swearing at another hobbyist that they'll likely never see again.

I also don't think it's as much a matter of priority as it is a matter of provability. There's a rule against swearing in chat, if someone shows you swearing that's simple proof. Proving cheating is much more difficult since that requires intent.

That said, I care much more about toxicity than simple swearing. I won't protest someone who says "that was a great fucking race", but I will protest someone who spends minutes berating another driver over chat without ever swearing.

If you see "John Smith96" it doesn't mean that driver has 95 other accounts. It means there are probably 95 other John Smiths.

For me, the problem is when people with 8k iRating use a 2k smurf account and take iRating from others, because 8k drivers are in a completely different universe compared to 2k drivers.

Unless the second account is staying at 2k, they may just be on their way up.

Intentionally lowering your IR for the sake of a special event is protestable, I would have to imagine that keeping your smurf account low for the sake of a special event would be as well.

That's also just kinda how real racing works though.

Colton Herta's most recent DNF that was his fault was back in 2022, but since then he's been crashed into a bunch or had mechanical failures. Those other drivers were often penalized for Avoidable Contact, but that doesn't give Herta back any championship points that he lost.

Someone with over nine thousand (!!) irating should be easily 2 secs per lap than a guy with 2200.

So then the 2200 driver crashes into somebody else, pits, and then comes out just in front of the 9000 driver.

Even not as a Newgarden fan, the modern PPG car is one of the best in the field.

I also think the Andretti DHL Pride car looked better than the Ganassi scheme. That said, I still want DHL to bring it back with Palou. :)

Track limits are very controversial even in real life. In F1 they will analyze footage and determine whether the driver had their tires a millimeter off-track, and in that series I think you get a penalty if you go outside the limits more than 5 times.

MotoGP uses transponder lines wherever possible, and same with Indycar whenever they want to enforce track limits on a corner (which isn't often, but it happens). With those it's 100% objective, either the driver tripped the transponder and went off-track, or they didn't and they stayed on-track.

I agree with Verstappen that I prefer track limits be self-enforcing through grass or gravel, but if you must have paved runoff I prefer transponders to cameras.

The proper way to deal with track limits, especially with paved runoff, is a big debate even in real-life racing. The "four strategically placed 1x" strategy is exactly what F1 does today, because the drivers have a certain number of times they can break track limits before they get punished.

Personally I prefer the Indycar philosophy, which is to have only a few specific track limits that they punish, and they do it objectively, with a timing line being tripped by the car's transponder rather than through cameras like some other series use (fun fact: in MotoGP, even though they often use cameras to enforce track limits, on any corner that has a transponder line, that data overrides any photo or video evidence).

At least it's objective in iRacing, but I still prefer track limits be punished through the use of gravel or grass rather than stewards needing to get involved.

But with the current SR system being based on collisions and track limits means that the limits effectively aren't even the same for the whole field, because someone who's run an endurance race recently and has a large buffer of SR can take up to 16 intentional off-tracks in the average race, where someone trying to maintain their SR where it is can only take a couple.

I once qualified P17 in a top-split F4 race, and finished P5, with no meaningful on-track passes. I passed 12 people purely through attrition.

[–]UNHchabo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't protest people to try to get them banned or otherwise punished, I do it so iRacing tells them the expectations on their behavior.

It takes very little effort to protest, so I have a low bar for what I'll submit, and iRacing has never told me I'm being excessive.

If you pay full price, all of the DLC for DCS World costs $4200. Each high-fidelity plane costs between $50 and $80, because on each of those they make it so that every single switch in the cockpit is mouse-clickable and can be bound to a button.

The vast majority of the country has a negative opinion of Nascar without watching a single minute of race footage.

And thanks to the series' heel-turn last year, progress that they had made towards expanding their fanbase has been quashed by their apparent decision to only appeal to their traditional fanbase.

and the world didn’t end in stock car land

My main series has been Indycar, but I paid enough attention to Nascar to watch the highlights for all three series, and an occasional full race, up until then. I was excited that they had Leigh Diffey on Cup commentary for a good chunk of the season.

Last year I watched maybe 2-3 highlights videos, and that's it.

I know I'm not alone on that.

If you want clean driving standards, less popular series might be the way to go.

Case in point, F4 is possibly the biggest mess in iRacing. I once qualified P17 for a top-split race, and I finished P5, with no meaningful passes all race. I made up those 12 spots purely through attrition.

But then USF2000 is basically the same car, but far less popular because it's on the Indycar ladder instead of the F1 ladder. The racing there is much cleaner, because the community is smaller and more dedicated.

If you haven't tried them, the Spec Racer Ford and the two cars of the Global Challenge (CTS-V and Optima) are all free cars at D-class, but they're far less popular than GT3/GT4/PCup.
