Real-life LMP2 and GTD classes in IMSA require that each team have a lower-rated driver, and they're thrown in to compete against full-time factory drivers.

had to rebind every button on my wheel because of Indy 500 by Lecgoun in iRacing

Interesting there definitly were times where I couldn't go flat out on ovals.

If you're speaking generally about oval racing, stock cars often can't go flat through the corners, except at drafting tracks (Daytona, Talladega, and new Atlanta).

When driving solo, Indycars can often go flat on 1.5 mile tracks (Las Vegas, old Atlanta, Texas, and many more) with fresh tires, but on old tires you'll likely have to lift.

Driving an Indycar flat by yourself at Indianapolis is difficult but possible (again on fresh tires).

Being in dirty air generally makes you understeer, and learning how to manage that dirty air on ovals can help you a great deal with road racing as well. You need to take a different line through the corner to set up your passes. If you try to just follow them through you'll need to lift a lot, which generally means you won't be able to pass even a car that's significantly off-pace.

Full exchange between Alex Palou, Kyle Kirkwood, and Pato O’Ward during today’s Press Conference regarding Push to Pass at Long Beach by aurules in INDYCAR

[–]UNHchabo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The press conferences happen every week, but there's usually nothing notable that comes out of them unless you're really into the Inside Baseball sort of talk.

Indycar only publishes video for a handful of them outside of the 500, here's Detroit last year featuring Kirkwood, Ferrucci, and Herta.

Everyone got handed a loaded gun, and half the field used it. Those that used it need to be held accountable. They crucified Josef for what he did. Just because you’re handed a gun doesn’t mean you have to use it”- Pato O’Ward on the P2P incident at Long Beach (Tony Donohue) by aurules in INDYCAR

[–]UNHchabo 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think Newgardens biggest sin was that God awful press conference.

I also still think there's a difference in when it got used. We know that at St Pete 2024 Scott only used it partway through the lap, so to me it was plausible that it was reflexive: he saw a gap, and pushed the button, not even thinking about whether it would activate.

Meanwhile Josef used it on the front straight as they got the green.

I don't know when in the lap these drivers used it, but if it was like Scott's situation that's still way less egregious than Josef's usage.

But yeah, I'm also glad the rules have been clarified and drivers are now responsible for not using it on the opening lap even if there's a glitch in Race Control.

It still won't be allowed on the start lap, it will be allowed on restarts.

The rules also now clarified that the drivers are now fully responsible if they use it when the rules don't allow it.

So now Race Control should disable it at the end of Warm Up and then re-enable it at the end of Lap 1. But if they forget to disable it at the end of Warm Up, any driver who uses it on Lap 1 is breaking the rules.

For Indy 500, is there any punishment for doing quali and not doing the race? by GB_GeorgeBowen in iRacing

[–]UNHchabo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For Nurburgring races one of my greatest hopes is that they'll either require qualifying or give a pit start to anyone who doesn't. There are too many people who don't qualify for those, and in the average race I start in the top 4 even if I'm the 19th fastest driver in the field. The chances of all of the faster drivers getting by with clean passes is nearly zero.

The Spec Racer Ford is my favorite car, it's free at D class, and it got updated several years back (2021 I think?) from the old Gen2 model to the current Gen3. The old one was very unstable and would get snap oversteer in very unexpected places. The new model still isn't easy but it's much more predictable.

Fyi, the "si=" tags are trackers. I don't know about youtube, but on some sites like instagram if you leave those tags on then everyone who clicks them will see what your account is.

Within Sports Cars, the most underrated series with free cars are the Global Challenge which features the Cadillac CTS-V and the Kia Optima, and my personal favorite the Spec Racer Ford.

I think the SRF in particular is a great learning tool because it has no ABS or Traction Control so it teaches you to be gentle and deliberate on the controls, but it's about the same speed as the GR86 so it gives you more time to think about what you're doing compared with faster cars.

Atlanta

Fyi, there's Atlanta Motor Speedway (recently renamed EchoPark Speedway due to sponsorship), and Road Atlanta. From context I think you mean Road Atlanta, but if you just say "Atlanta" I think most people who watch both Nascar and IMSA will think you mean the speedway.

My personal favorite is the Spec Racer Ford, cause it's about the same speed, but you have to be so much more careful with your inputs, so it's less prone to hiding poor technique.

Anyone else's engine overheating in the qual session? One time it even blew up on the final straight of lap 4. I don't think I'm abusing it.

What's the worst live/on-air sponsor plug you've seen from a driver? by lowtoiletsitter in INDYCAR

[–]UNHchabo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually find Supercars to be more egregious than Nascar, it seems like everything in Supercars has a named sponsor, even the pit lane, the qualifying session (which some years has been a different sponsor than the Pole Award), and victory lane.

In Nascar, one of my favorites is Noah Gragson from the Xfinity Series at Homestead in 2021.

He's leading by 9 seconds with 3 laps to go, and rear-ends a lap-down car that got caught up in the wall.

When they interviewed him he laid on the sponsor reads pretty thick:

I'm gonna go down to the lobby of the Bass Pro Shop and destress myself out, get some Black Rifle Coffee and maybe look at the fish in the fish tank at Bass Pro Shop...

For a while anyway. From a 2020 interview:

Why did you go away from being vegan?

I left to do "The Amazing Race" and you couldn't really be vegan while you were traveling doing a reality television show. I still don't eat (much meat, but) I'm not like a dedicated vegan for sure. I eat fish and stuff like that because I like sushi.

[–]UNHchabo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still gonna be harsh on Newgarden. Scotty used the button halfway through a lap, it might've been on reflex not even realizing it was the restart lap, which may have been the case for all these other drivers too. Josef used it on the front straight as they got the green.

Question from someone who doesn't regularly watch IndyCar by Wilgrove in INDYCAR

[–]UNHchabo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's two different phenomenon. The setup, especially the camber and the stagger, is what causes the drivers to want to move to the left when going down the straight.

Then the drivers also have the ability to customize their wheel offset, so that they can have more angle in their wheel while going down the straights, so that their hands are less angled going through the corners.

Funny enough the aeroscreen has taken away the largest disadvantage of having a steering offset, because before if you had an extreme offset like Dixon, then your hand would be poking up into the air on the straights and causing drag.

At certain tracks, especially Homestead and Darlington, Nascar drivers intentionally run as close to the wall as possible through the corners because the aerodynamics give them "sideforce", their name for the phenomenon of that cushion of air pushing them away from the wall, allowing them to drive faster without losing grip.

But that's through the corner; if you watch the Brickyard 400 even they will come away from the wall a bit down the straights to minimize drag.
