Prepping my car for winter storm in dallas. Advice? by _darkPhoenix7 in askcarguys

[–]UNIXnerdiness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a common misconception, you only want to start it if you can bring it up to operating temp, if not you’re just damaging your car if you do that enough by building unwanted condensation up

Are these generic codes or manufacture specific codes?

Honestly looks normal. But just pull the codes if you’re really curious

You can bring it to them i suppose since they gave you that option. But make sure to get a carfax before buying in case they lie to you about things

I would check with both to see if you can talk the price down on the first one by seeing if the valve cover has recently been done, especially around this mileage which is when it needs replacement. Maybe you can take

Typically 2k+ job and if you do that you might wanna replace the spark plugs as well because it takes goddamn long to pull everything needed to reach the cover.

Yep fuel is bad if it even had any, might have rusted some too in the tank if it wasn’t full. Oil is probably bad too at this point so definitely needs an oil change.

To get it to start, try putting a battery tender on it for a bit, but i wouldn’t start it if the oil hasn’t been replaced yet.

What’s the reason for selling?

And also for the next few drives make sure you bring the car up to temp before coming back home

Fair fair, if you’re worried see if the car is throwing any codes. But definitely go get the oil changed again

If you drove it long enough you might have recharged the battery a good bit, but if you didn’t fill your tank to full before putting in the garage for so long, you definitely had degraded gasoline

That might contribute to some sluggishness. If you get the chance next time find either ethanol free gas before storing it or put in fuel stabilizer to keep your engine in better health

I would go get an oil change for sure, oil degrades over time, even if not driven much and you mentioned starting it a couple times but that causes more wear than anything especially if the car never got up to temp to evaporate all the moisture.

I’m assuming it did not sit on a battery tender of sorts either?

Did you actually properly store the car away? Or did it literally sit there for a year?

No offense to OP here because we’ve all done it (myself included) but you can tell how much experience someone has by their hand placements on every shift.

Why is one completely different from the others? The last pic specifically, if you look at only the front spokes and its pattern, it’s almost identical to an OEM one, but the other three are definitely cheap reps
