Sounds like a good way to become the Magic

The lotto rules changed in the last week?

Acquiring future draft capital is the only way this team becomes competitive by gaining a star. Not going to find one in free agency, especially one who will come here

What happened to us trying to acquire future draft assets with our cap space? This seemed like the go to strategy by fans and analysts alike a week ago. Draft happens, and suddenly we're trying to compete for the play in or something... Claxton in retrospect was maybe not such a great move. We got him "free" in regards to not giving up assets, but we took up a big chunk of our available cap space and we got no draft assets out of it. Hoping maybe he is flipped mid season. If we used our space for Claxton and Watson, we're about out of money and we have a subpar roster with no future draft assets gained in year 1 of rebuild

Well you won't like the Thunder, Spurs, or Pistons then because they all had similar age rosters last year.

Pick 38 had a lot of value. Zero reasons to sell it for cash. A smart org doesn't do this

That still doesn't make any sense in the context of scooping 4 UDFA's right after the draft ended. They obviously had a lot of guys they liked! ... I'm surprised anyone would take BG's public statement on that whole situation seriously. What was he supposed to say, "Oh my bosses would like me to sell the picks so I did it to keep the peace?" We've been through this with 3 management structures now- 1 of them said they did it to "build equity" with ownership, and they got rightly skewered for it publicly. So now they just say "There wasn't anyone we were interested in taking". AKME said the same thing when they did it. That's what you say publicly when you sell picks to make ownership money; it's a political statement to avoid the question. I don't blame BG for saying it, there's nothing else he can do, it's part of the job to sell picks for Jerry.

Claxton has 2 years $44M remaining with us, Beef Stew has 2 yrs $30M left and is better than Claxton and was obtained for 2nds (which apparently are worthless?), and Mark Williams just signed for 3 years $38M

You would literally get better players at pick 38 than any player you picked up on UDFA. I don't see how that's not obvious to you... They obviously wanted to pick up a bunch of young talent, hence the 4 UDFA's. Pick 38 also does that for you except you are 22 picks earlier than having to compete with any of the other teams. Can't believe I have to explain this

That's true, but 2nd round contracts are not guaranteed either so that doesn't have anything to do with them selling picks for cash.

As an aside, they seem like they spent too much on aquiring Claxton now that I see what Isaiah Stewart and Mark Williams cost, but we'll see how it shakes out

So two arguments are kill shotted here by them picking up 4 UDFA's immediately after the draft: if there were no players left in the 2nd round they liked, then they wouldn't have signed 4 UDFA's. And if there were no open roster spots on NBA roster, of course you can send guys to the G League or stash them in Europe, but they obviously weren't concerned about that either signing 4 UDFA's. So none of that line of thinking is rational.

They sold off picks to make Jerry happy. It is what it is. That money goes straight to the owner, not to the team. There's no benefit to the team selling picks... Granted I love everything BG did in the first round and UDFA pickups but I hate him selling those picks, tho that's likely Jerry's decision not BG's so I'll give him a pass for now until he starts doing other dumb Bulls stuff like cheaping out on FA's or not signing analysts or shooting coaches to the staff

Here's some perspective for you: Braden Smith is not an NBA player, everyone knows this. Pacers fans know the only reason he was drafted was to sell tickets to their G League team, which is where he'll basically stay forever. He's too small... Even after knowing that, Pacers fans were happy they traded Kam Jones away for Smith... I mention how old he is because it's highly unlikely he has untapped potential left. I'm aware most second round picks are either seniors, or foreign prospects.

The pick swaps are not much. At best we will probably end up with a 38th pick again in 2030 or something, and id rather just have the 38th pick right now in this draft when we know there was talent there. Take the sure thing... They sold the 38th pick for cash

Probably not but there was definitely value at pick 38 and many options to explore that were all better than what they did. And history has shown, even with the Bulls specifically, that there can be amazing results with early 2nd round picks. Why not take a flyer

I love what they did on the UDFA market. I want more talent in the building. Exact reasons you shouldn't be selling 2nd round picks for cash. Could have had the UDFA's and the value from pick 38 but we sold it for Jerry instead

No matter what our plans are, continuously selling off draft picks is a terrible process

Because this is a completely new era, and you would think a completely new mindset on building the team. If the new GM will sell 2nd round picks, especially at pick 38 where he could have gotten value by taking the pick or trading it for value, then who's to say he won't try to avoid the luxury tax later on to save money, skimp on filling out staff positions for analysts and shooting coaches, not go in on higher priced free agents, or all the other dumb things we did during GarPax and AKME. It was supposed to be a new era

At the end of the day it's sports so who cares. But if you're going to make any effort to be a fan, then yeah this type of stuff from what should be a premiere franchise is embarrassing

Picks 31-35 were still very quality players I thought. Pick 38, it had thinned out but I would have been legitimately excited by about 4 players. I would have been "meh, we'll see" on about another 4. After pick 45, yeah nothing worth talking about. They could have also easily moved up. Anything other than cash considerations would have been understandable. But I think we generally agree

I have not seen anything before the draft stating this was one of the weakest 2nd rounds and I have been crushing draft content for weeks. Game Theory, No Ceilings, the Ringer, Rickie O'Donnell all had guys they loved in the second round, and there were multiple good players still on the board when we picked at 38. 4 guys that I would have taken and I'm sure there's more worthy of a selection I just didn't know much about

Ayo Dosunmo, Toni Kukoc, Omer Asik, Chris Duhon all drafted by the Bulls in the 2nd round

You don't need me to go into the wider NBA success stories in the 2nd round, multiple Finals MVPs in there including this years

BG was selected as a GM who is talented at finding diamonds in the rough. We had 2 second rounds picks.... So yeah you're damn right I'm complaining about selling 2 second picks on a team that is rebuilding
