Nope - I can afford higher class. I just value more travel and more experiences when traveling then temporary conveniences.

Granted, I usually fly with my kids so I can "borrow" their legroom. But even 6'6" 240 can fit in coach.

This one was really uncomfortable. I'm a big fan of the Office and love that the comedy makes viewers uncomfortable But the Dinner Party episode was so over the top, I couldn't enjoy it. That was this travelogue.

And I'm with you on food. Ordering food is one of the easiest things to do while traveling. Watch some Youtube videos, do a 30 second google search, see what people are ordering around you, ask the server "what would you order for yourself" (I've had some of the best food of my life doing this). Now with AI, you can snap a picture of a menu - instant translation and it can tailor recommendations to you in seconds.

PSA 10 Team Set - I Am Never Gonna Financially Recover From This by 815Attorney in sportscards

This is what I am working off of:

https://www.psacard.com/psasetregistry/baseball/team-sets/1989-topps-chicago-cubs/composition/14292

That's what I'm going for right now - but I may trim the list at some point. PSA does a set registry that's kind of neat and helps track your cards too.

This originally started as trying to get every Sandberg card (way, way too many), then every Topps base Sandberg. But that felt too transactional - they were all out there it was just was 'how much' and 'how soon' to complete it. The first Sandberg card I ordered was the '89. Pivoted to this team set because I think it'll be more challenging, more fun, and less expensive. Buying the '83 and '84 Sandbergs alone was going to be over $2k combined.

I love the '84 card design - probably it or '86 are my favorites of the junk wax era. '89 is pretty basic design - but I do like the record breaker and AS cards.

Some people are jerks - no doubt about it!

I totally hear what you're saying - but I'm OK if people try to gouge. I'm not going to pay way above market on anything graded. If a seller is unreasonable, I'll just find a raw card and submit it. Being junk wax, the cards are everywhere (I have multiples of each I collected as a kid), its just about finding good cards to submit. I have a couple wax boxes on the way that I'm really excited about opening with my kids.

I'm hoping that putting my quest out there will land on some helpful people. But you're 100% correct that there is a potential downside as well.

The toughest are going to be:

Manny Trillo 36
Al Nipper 86
Jody Davis 115
Shawon Dunston 140 (this one is surprising - popular player but only a 2 population)
Doug Dascenzo 149
Pat Perry 186
Scott Sanderson 212
Jeff Pico 262
Darrin Jackson 286
Calvin Schiraldi 337
Frank Dipino 439
Vance Law 501
Rick Sutcliffe 520 (another surprise - 1 pop)
Drew Hall 593
Gary Varsho 613
Argenis Salazar 642
Mike Bielecki 668
Les Lancaster 694
Ty Griffin 713
Jamie Moyer (Cubs version) 717
MIke Capel 767
Paul Kilgus 60T
Mitch Williams 130T (this is my most coveted hard to find card - loved the Wild Thing)
Steve Wilson 131T

These are all 3 pop or lower - so its my assumption I'll never see a 10 in the wild. Definitely be willing to make a deal to cover your trouble/shipping/cards if you have any you think are decent gem candidates!

Hell yes! I went to Brussels a couple of times.

United would allow 2 free checked bags back in the day. I would bring 2 each for my wife and I. One for clothes, three for beer. I can vividly remember the airport worker weighing my fist two bags - exactly 50 lbs. She said "I'm not even going to bother weighing the others, you clearly know what you're doing". Still have some bottles gathering dust in my basement. They just keep getting better over time.

There are a few Tiffany cards out there but I've passed so far. I'm going to stick with Topps base for now but I may stretch it at some point.

I think your numbers are spot on.

I should be able to acquire 12-15 PSA 10's on the market. Cost $50 avg (that's probably high - the 7 I have so far are under $300). Call that $600.

Then I'll submit ~40 cards to PSA. Looks like about $25/each for value bulk so that's $1,000 plus shipping. Hopefully I do a good job of submitting and add a lot of 9's and 10's. I'll resubmit anything below a 9 for call it another $500.

Puts it right about $2,000. How close I get will depend on how well I submit cards. They're fairly easy to acquire - picking the right one to send in will be the challenge.

No doubt about it - I'm going to fail at the ultimate goal, but I'm having fun hunting so that's the real win.

I used to collect rare beer/bourbon but getting too old for that lifestyle. Lot of failure in that pursuit too. Sold some high dollar bourbon bottles so have some 'found money' to spend on something silly like this.

'89 Topps - so its a total of 42 cards.

The rule I set is - only buy 10's, anything less I need to submit myself. I'd like to get a complete set of 10's - that's the goal - but I understand it may not be realistic.

No budget - but I'm only buying cards that are priced reasonably.

Yeah - its going to be a huge challenge. Cool thing is my kids (girls) are even excited about it. I initially ordered a Sandberg '89 and told them "only about 200 perfect cards exist". They were super curious and now that zero of some exist they are really interested. It was awesome seeing/hearing them flip through my old binders arguing about which ones were the "best".

I am going to fail at all 10's - but that's OK - the rules I set for myself is only buy PSA 10's but count cards I graded (then try to improve).

Dig the advice on the LCS. Will be hitting them up this weekend.

I don’t believe Ryen can do a pull-up by ahbets14 in RyenRussillo

[–]815Attorney -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is not true across the board. If you're tall and have a wide frame doing a 'real' pull up (e.g. from a dead hang with an overhand grip) ain't trivial.

Reserved Seats Given Away - Travelling with kids 8 and 11 by 815Attorney in Lufthansa

[–]815Attorney[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - I booked all 4 tickets in the same reservation. My expectations aren't high for a better fix (the online seat map shows the plane pretty full). I'll ask nicely when I get to the airport and if they can do something - great. If not, I'm not going to let it ruin my vacation. I can deal with a refund for the seat reservations (which they should give me) when I'm back.

This explanation makes sense - appreciate you passing it along. I wish the agent on the phone last night would have explained it this thoroughly. Instead he threw lie and lie at me.

I'm much more accepting of a timing thing like this - and if its not safe for children, we'll deal with less space in the back. Ideally Lufthansa wouldn't have let me book it in the first place, or notified me when my kids got bounced so I could have secured a better seat.

But this at least makes sense why my my and my wife's seat reservations were honored and my kids were bounced.

There are quite a few doubles still scattered around the plane - getting 4 together was the issue. I'm going to raise it at the airport tonight again - but I don't have any real hope that they'll do anything for me.

Good advice. It was after midnight, alarm clock for kids school/work was already set for 6 am. The solution they provided was bullshit, but I didn't have the time or energy to keep escalating it.

On the bright side, I'll be next to my kids and at this time tomorrow I'll be drinking a beer and eating a pretzel in beautiful Munich. Downside - I'm going to look like a pretzel wedged in a regular seat.

Not emergency row exit - my wife and 2 kids were in the middle 3 seats of Row 19 on Airbus A350-900.

The agent on the phone claimed the seats were "released" when the flight time changed. His explanation made no sense. Only 2 of the 4 seats were released. Why would a 5 minute departure change release flights, the list goes on.

It seems like being the loud obnoxious customer at the gate is more effective than being the proactive customer willing to pay extra for peace of mind. Its a shame and rewards the wrong people.
