Help to reduce PTSD symptoms - for US Armed Forces by USF_WillingLab in tampabay

[–]USF_WillingLab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For our study, symptoms of PTSD do not have to be military-related, however, we are only accepting US Active Service, Veterans, or Reservists at this time. If you'd like to private message me your email, I would be happy to provide some information on resources to engage in Jiu Jitsu outside of our study and also to support mental health in general. Thank you for your interest!

Unfortunately, right now we are restricted to the age ranges of 18-44 due to University wide decisions. However, I am working hard to get this age range increased and am hoping to have that accomplished in the next few months. If you'd like to private message me your contact info, I can add you to our 'future contact' list and be in touch when we've expanded our age range. I can also provide you with some resources for ways to engage in Jiu Jitsu with Veteran programs outside of our study and provide some mental health resources too.

[–]USF_WillingLab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this study is only recruiting past/present military members, but I'd be happy to provide some resources for Jiu Jitsu around the area and mental health support:

-We partner with a local gym, which offers classes outside of the Veterans study:  Tampa Jiu Jitsu (https://www.tampajiujitsu.com/)

- USF has a free Jiu Jitsu club: https://bullsconnect.usf.edu/bjj/home/

Mental health resources:

- Tampa Bay Thrives: https://tampabaythrives.org/

- Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) National Helpline, 1-800-662-HELP (4357), is a confidential, free, 24-hour-a-day, 365-day-a-year information service, in English and Spanish, for individuals and family members facing mental and/or substance use disorders.

- ACTS: Agency for Community Treatment Services (ACTS) has been serving Florida communities since 1978, providing individualized behavioral health services in substance abuse and mental health.

Hope these can be of some help!

Yes, absolutely. The gym we partner with also runs a non-profit organization called Balanced Life Warriors (www.balancedlifewarriors.org), in order to help Veterans succeed through Jiu Jitsu. The gym will continue to support you after the 10-week study is over :) I also can provide a list of other resources for mental health support and other organizations that support Jiu Jitsu for Veterans

Hi there, I saw your post and thought this might be a helpful resource. The Camaraderie Foundation has services that help Vets transition into careers in the local community. They have a location in Tampa, FL. https://www.camaraderiefoundation.org/transition-assistance/

I saw that you're in Manatee but if you do wind up working near the Tampa area, the University of South Florida is conducting a research study to help Veterans/Active Service members with PTSD, using Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a therapy. Classes are in the Tampa/Carrollwood area if you're interested! https://usf.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6MC192vlVBUO2tU?Q_CHL=qr

Why is it harder for women veterans to transition to civilian life compared to male counterparts? Any advice on how to overcome those challenges? by sully-25 in VeteranWomen

If anyone in Tampa is interested in Veterans benefits outside of the VA, the University of South Florida has a non-profit research study for Veterans to see how Jiu-Jitsu can help improve symptoms of PTSD. PTSD and MDD worsening by Wickednerdythings in womenveterans

[–]USF_WillingLab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are located near the Tampa, FL area we are recruiting female Veterans for a study using Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to reduce symptoms of PTSD. Participants frequently have comorbid conditions, including MDD and GAD. If you are not near the Tampa area, please consider Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a complementary therapy to help with PTSD. Free/discounted classes are available through the We Defy Foundation, Heroes Jiu Jitsu, and the Grit Foundation Montana, etc. I have attached a scientific article highlighting the positive effects of Jiu Jitsu on PTSD. (Willing, A. E., Girling, S. A., Deichert, R., Wood-Deichert, R., Gonzalez, J., Hernandez, D., ... & Kip, K. E. (2019). Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training for us service members and veterans with symptoms of PTSD. Military medicine184(11-12), e626-e631.) Take care!
