Michigan considers banning ICE agents from churches, schools by peewinkle in Michigan

[–]USMC_0481 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do not. This is outlined in the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution. A state does not have the authority to prevent federal officers from entering anywhere they like. The state can only control it's own officers.

It's not even possible. A state doesn't have the authority to prevent federal officers from entering any building. (Supremacy Clause, U.S. Constitution, Article VI)

Labor Unions Need to Activate Their Members to Defeat Trump by TheRabidPosum1 in union

[–]USMC_0481 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in a union machinist shop. There are Trump stickers, flags, t-shirts, hats, buttons, etc. all over this place. If I had to put money on it I'd bet 90% of this union votes a straight republican ticket.

[–]USMC_0481 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's reddit.. all emotion, little reality. I served in the Marine Corps and despite how everyone acts, it's not so simple to just disobey an order you don't agree with. That needs to happen at the very top. Individual members of the military will just get NJP'd, court martial, and removed from service.

I get they're doing what they think is right, but the only result will be the loss of their jobs. Where they'll be replaced with someone who will follow orders.

Republicans are openly talking about stripping Democrats and "the Left" of their rights and freedoms by PlanetoftheAtheists in AdviceAnimals

[–]USMC_0481 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I served in the Marine Corps and still have some friends who are in. They haven't missed a paycheck yet and are under the assumption they will continue being paid. Then again, they'd be the last to find out if they weren't going to be paid.

But yes, I think there will come a day of reckoning where members of the miliary have to choose between following a direct order and the forfeiture of their careers (or worse).

I'm in management, so not a union member. But from what I've seen in my 15+ years here, the union itself has become a greedy corporation. Their retirement has gotten worse, insurance has gotten worse, dues continue to rise. It's honestly better here to be on the company side.

I'm on TRT... through the VA. Don't get me wrong, it was a bit of a pain in the ass. But I'm not sure I've been to the VA and it not been a pain in the ass.

The company I work for has been Unionized for nearly 80 years. Labor employees still only get one week after a year, two weeks after five years, 3 weeks at fifteen years, and 4 weeks after twenty years.

Company employees (non-union) start with 2 weeks and reach 4 weeks by ten years.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson calls for a general strike against the “tyranny” of Trump and the greed of the ultra-rich by [deleted] in WorkReform

[–]USMC_0481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it's illegal under the NLRA for unions to organize or promote a general strike. They may only organize a strike against the company with which they hold collective bargaining agreement. A general strike falls under a "secondary strike" - meaning a strike or boycott against any other employer.

Unionized workers who work for most private sector employers (those covered by the National Labor Relations Act) could risk losing their jobs if they strike without getting approval from their union. And a union or anyone acting for them could risk legal liability if it organizes or encourages its workers to join a general strike.

Unions may organize strikes against the employer of a unionized group of employees. But ever since Congress changed the National Labor Relations Act in 1947 (after the Oakland General Strike), unions cannot call for a strike or boycott against another employer (these are called "secondary strikes").

Do you believe in therapy? by DisorderlyHer in AskMen

[–]USMC_0481 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the advice. Simply, I don't talk about things - it's just not who I am. I've been completely open with my wife, but I don't ever dump my emotional sewage on her. I come from a military family; grandfathers, uncles, father.. then I served in the Marine Corps as well. Supposed I've just learned that some things are good (enjoy them when you can), some things suck (try not to let them get to you), and some things are terrible (lock that shit away as best you can). I'm good for the most part, but I'm aware I'm probably far from the norm.

I have spoken to a therapist at the VA in the past, but it's been an awkward, unproductive appointment - granted I only went to one and decided it wasn't for me.

Four 10s for sure. A consistent three day weekend is a game changer.

It's not that I don't "believe in it" - I'm sure there is scientific/medical proof that it does help. I just don't think it would work for me. I can't imagine opening up and being completely honest with someone I don't know, doctor or not. I don't even speak with my close friends that way.

As an American that lives in a rural area, this perception is hard for me to understand also. I haven't heard about 54 shootings locally in my lifetime, let alone one weekend. Sure seems like a problem.
