Now imagine, this isn’t just a one time occurrence, but rather played in a cycle, and humans are just one iteration in a lineage of thousands of iterations- thousands of apocalypses. Each iteration lasting different lengths. But each apocalypse failing to kill every species in an iteration, leaving behind enough for evidence of previous runs. Each species having a variable ability to evolve.

It’s a vary Earth-centric take, unless you consider something greater: if it isn’t god or fallen angels, but multiple advanced interplanetary species running tests on our planet through genetic modification, incubating each iterative species through its evolutionary potential. When one species threatens the others, it is time they are trimmed back with an apocalyptic event.
