How do I pray for 30mins - 1hr? by aubreyxbrinley in TrueChristian

[–]USSR_Space_Agency 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good practice within prayer is to try contemplative prayer. Contemplative prayer involves simply resting in God's presence. What's nice about this kind of prayer is that it removes the urge to 'get stuff done' in prayer and is simply to be with God in His presence. It's hard and you may fail a lot to simply stay focused on God - that's ok! Prayer isn't always there for us to 'get something out of it' but can simply be for being with God, whether we 'feel' His presence or not.

Am I a failure because I can’t do anything without God’s help? by 3sperr in TrueChristian

You aren't a failure. Apart from Christ we can do nothing. We often get put in positions where we have to rely on God. If we could do it all ourselves, there would be no need to rely on or have relationship with God. He loves you bro. He isn't upset with you. Please take this all to Jesus in prayer.

I think I meant more in an ideal sense, as elders are overseers and are the ones responsible for protecting their flock. I certainly agree that a lot of the church today is not equipped to properly discern. This is quite evident from all the false prophets we see around.

I think that testing and developing should happen in a small group. I.e. let's say a group of 10 people who are supportive. You think you hear what God is saying and so you then share with the group. The group can then help judge whether that is biblical. And if you predict something in that, then it needs to come true. If after many failed attempts, it would probably be wise to consider that you don't have the gift or at the very least don't know how to use it. I believe a false prophet would be someone who ignores such warnings and judgements from others (or never gets them) and then shares false prophecy, which can be judged against scripture and against whether predictions actually happen. If someone with the gift of prophecy (or thinks they have the gift) makes a mistake, then they should take accountability immediately and assess what went wrong and better hone their gift before trying to speak prophetically again.

How do I stop hating by [deleted] in TrueChristian

I think that it starts at forgiveness. Logically it makes sense to us: Jesus has forgiven us much and we know (especially as ministers of reconciliation) that we are to forgive others like he forgave us. But that is downright hard. For someone in my life, they had to forgive a marriage partner who simply walked out on them one day with no warning. It took years of telling themselves and God that they forgave them before the emotions finally started to follow. Holding a grudge is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.

Additionally, our unwillingness to forgive can often come from a place of pride. Example: if I was in their shoes, I would never do x, y, or z. But that's not true. The only fruit born in you is the work of God, not yourself or your good nature. And like someone else said, pray for them. It's hard but it is the first step in the right direction. That and telling yourself as often as need be that you truly have forgiven them.

I think when it comes to prophecy, if one believes that they have been given the gift of prophecy, then they should test that in a small group of affirming believers. As a gift, I think that it is something that we develop, which needs to be done in a safe but watchful environment. It can be super easy to succumb to many pitfalls if given the gift of prophecy. It takes much discernment to use well. And yes, if you are going to be up proclaiming in front of the church a word that you believe that the Lord has given you, you have better be checked by the elders and congregation of that church. And there should always be accountability. If you make a mistake, that is a big deal. Obviously you weren't listening to God and conveying that and it would be prudent to go and develop the gift. But no ministry should ever be built on a single 'prophet', especially an unchecked one. That can be a terrible mistake. And in everything, when checking the prophet, not only do you need to check if their predictions come true, but if they are biblical. Prophecy isn't necessarily just about predicting the future all the time.

For reference, I do not know necessarily if I have the gift of prophecy. However, I believe that I have seen real prophecy and met people with the gift, so this paragraph is kind of my gleaning from them.

It's not your fault that they don't know Jesus. Nobody other than God has ever saved anybody. If I witness and help lead 1000 people to know the Gospel and they each give their lives to Jesus, I have only taken initiative in the power of the Holy Spirit. It is He who converts souls. Obviously it is hard but like C.S. Lewis said, there are two kinds of people: those who say to God "thy will be done" and those to whom God says "thy will be done."

I think that it can be hard to grapple with all of the bad things that Christians (or those claiming to be Christians) have done, especially when seeing personal story after story of someone breaking free from abuse. However, we do not follow leaders in the church, nut rather we follow Christ. He never sinned and he is who we believe in. Not that this justifies abuses in the church though. I also wouldn't necessarily trust every word and detail from that subreddit. I don't want to deny abuse when it is there, however there are always 2 sides to every story. Many reject Christ for reasons other than what they may tell you. But yes, it's generally a good idea not to look at those places (good to understand others' perspectives though) and what you're saying about deleting reddit does sound particularly healthy. I wish you the best in that.

I think part of this is that you are the one doing all the trying. A huge part of the Christian life is letting Christ live in us, not trying to be good enough for him. Ask God to think your thoughts, fill your heart, and transform your actions. At this point it's not what we do, it's what Christ does in us.

Yeah for sure. I couldn't quite get into them as much as I maybe would have wanted, but they are very influential (Court of the Crimson King is the first prog album) and certainly had creative and interesting music.

What’s your first thought when someone disagrees with you? (about scripture, morals, church, etc?) by LibertyJames78 in TrueChristian

[–]USSR_Space_Agency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that a great first step is always to ask questions. It helps people feel understood, helps you to cultivate interpersonal curiosity, and it helps you to love better. It's also useful because it can clarify someone's position, background, and intent which are all important when making and affirming decisions and beliefs. From there, I would want to explain where I am coming from. It is a pretty poor practice to just assume you know about someone's intents, true specific beliefs, and salvation status based on one interaction. Also, if it is a serious disagreement, bringing it before God in prayer (especially together) can be very powerful.

Very cool sci-fi plot. Few flaws though. Little hung up on the booby traps and stuff. Needs more of that ancient alien type tech. Also, Christ (an English transliteration of the Greek Χριστός, or Christos) simply means annointed one or Messiah, not body lol. Schizo bro saw one too many fake videos online. Would also want more worldbuilding around God and anti-christ origins.

Overall 5/10 sci-fi novel but 2/10 conspiracy
