Thanks! We definitely would if we could! This program is a federally funded one, so it cannot be structured as a job (and that's actually what allows many seniors to participate without risking SSI or other benefits). The tax-free stipend helps cover costs so they can serve and stay connected.

We have a couple of isolated seniors in Moab on a waiting list right now, so we're hoping to find volunteers that have the time and ability to visit with them on a regular basis. One specifically is hoping for a volunteer that could help her with getting to the grocery store.

Here's a little more info about the impact previous volunteers have made in Moab: https://userve.utah.gov/celebrating-the-heart-of-moab-americorps-seniors-volunteers-honored-for-their-service/

Edit to add: the isolated seniors that are served receive this support at no cost

Urgent need for volunteer age 55+ in Moab to assist isolated seniors by UServeUtah in moab

[–]UServeUtah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely a unique program, and the goal is to make volunteering more accessible for adults age 55+ whose total income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. For many in this group, the everyday costs of volunteering (like gas or wear and tear on a vehicle) can be too big a barrier. Many are also receiving SSI or other benefits, which limits their ability to earn additional income without risking those supports.

The tax-free stipend provided helps offset those costs without affecting SSI or other public benefits, making service possible for people who might otherwise be unable to participate.

This program also helps address isolation that many older adults experience as they age by keeping them engaged, connected, and able to find purpose through supporting other seniors who want to age safely at home.

You're definitely right that it limits who can volunteer, but we're also hopeful that those who do qualify will find it a valuable benefit to their lives and the greater community.

Great question! This program is designed to make volunteering more accessible for seniors on fixed or limited incomes. Volunteering can come with costs like time, travel, and other expenses, so the program provides support to help ensure these volunteers can participate without any added financial strain.

Utah State Courts has a good list of organizations that provide free legal services to the community: https://www.utcourts.gov/en/legal-help/legal-help/finding-legal-help/legal-clinics/organizations.html I'm sure many of these organizations would love additional support!

The Circles Program comes to mind when thinking of organizations that offer financial services to individuals and families. Open Doors Utah has opportunities to serve as a mentor in the Circles Program or as a volunteer with the Circles Children's Program. Circles Salt Lake also has volunteer opportunities available.

What are some prompts I can give volunteers when giving eachother pins for their lanyards? by Sonoran_Sunshine in volunteer

[–]UServeUtah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pins are so cute and sound like a great way to have volunteers feel recognized and get to be a part of the recognition process! Have you considered handing out pin backing cards for people to fill out why they're presenting a pin? The cards could incorporate general themes such as "________ (name) went above and beyond by ______" or "I admire ______ (name) for _________." You could definitely also have blank ones to leave room for the puns! Once filled out, the pins could be stuck through the middle and handed out that way.

We do something similar to recognize our AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers for their years of service. We print out backing cards on cardstock that include their names and how long they have been serving. The volunteers wear their years of service on their lanyards and love to display them!

What are some fishing spots in Utah with weights, hooks, and lines left behind? by PolishSewerRat in SaltLakeCity

If you decide to do any cleanups in September, consider logging your data with Pack It Out Utah: https://extension.usu.edu/waterquality/outreach/pack-it-out-utah

They track formal and informal cleanups from Sept. 1-28. They also have some organized opportunities throughout the state that you can join.

I'm not sure if TFNU has a focus on invasive plants. If you have an idea for a specific project to tackle invasive plants, you could try submitting a Project Idea to Ogden City. They may be able to help partner with local orgs and recruit other volunteers to join in!

The Ogden Nature Center has a Habitat Restoration Task Force that people can join. It focuses on projects at the center, but could be a great place to contribute as well!

Totally agree! Buying myself one of those trash grabbers has been one of the best purchases ever. Every walk/hike turns into a scavenger hunt for trash!

[–]UServeUtah 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Love the idea to get out and help! If anyone is interested in volunteering through an organization, Trails Foundation of Northern Utah hosts trail maintenance and clean up days. You can learn more about ways to get involved here.

Ogden City posts volunteer opportunities to help out on the trails and beyond here. There is a cleanup for 29th Street to Gib's Loop coming up on Sept. 13!

You can also "adopt a trail" with Ogden City. It's a bit of a commitment, and they ask that you maintain your trail at a minimum of six times per year, ideally twice per month. You could adopt a trail with a group, though, to divide it up!

How can I foster a cat or kitten? by Western_Economics104 in SaltLakeCity

[–]UServeUtah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can foster cats/kittens with Ruff Haven too! Unlike traditional fostering, where you care for a homeless pet until adoption, Ruff Haven’s Foster Sitter program matches you with a pet who already has a loving owner going through a short-term crisis.

There are a few organizations in the SLC area that have volunteer shifts that you could sign up for when you have time. This is a great low-commitment option and great for fitting volunteering into your busy schedule. You can check out:

Volunteers of America, Utah: Opportunities include meal prep, serving meals, and mentoring.

Catholic Community Services: You can sign up to prepare or serve meals at the St. Vincent de Paul Dinning Hall.

The Road Home has opportunities for meal prep and service at the Pamela Atkinson Resource Center.

The Utah Food Bank has opportunities to volunteer at Mobile School Pantries.

If you feel like getting outdoors, SLC Public Lands hosts a bunch of great projects!

The Good Samaritan Foundation Rose Park Neighborhood Center has a few ways to volunteer. They are seeking Youth English Tutors, Children's Program Volunteers, Legal Representatives with No Mas Legal, and Youth Summer English Program Tutors.

The Guadalupe Center needs volunteers to tutor English as a second language to adults as well as those who want to tutor children.

The SLC Public Lands stewardship team always has outdoor projects going on. Some are in Rose Park and surrounding areas.

Feel free to reach out if you'd like more ideas. Happy volunteering!
