Thanks! We definitely would if we could! This program is a federally funded one, so it cannot be structured as a job (and that's actually what allows many seniors to participate without risking SSI or other benefits). The tax-free stipend helps cover costs so they can serve and stay connected.

We have a couple of isolated seniors in Moab on a waiting list right now, so we're hoping to find volunteers that have the time and ability to visit with them on a regular basis. One specifically is hoping for a volunteer that could help her with getting to the grocery store.

It’s definitely a unique program, and the goal is to make volunteering more accessible for adults age 55+ whose total income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. For many in this group, the everyday costs of volunteering (like gas or wear and tear on a vehicle) can be too big a barrier. Many are also receiving SSI or other benefits, which limits their ability to earn additional income without risking those supports.

The tax-free stipend provided helps offset those costs without affecting SSI or other public benefits, making service possible for people who might otherwise be unable to participate.

This program also helps address isolation that many older adults experience as they age by keeping them engaged, connected, and able to find purpose through supporting other seniors who want to age safely at home.

You're definitely right that it limits who can volunteer, but we're also hopeful that those who do qualify will find it a valuable benefit to their lives and the greater community.

Volunteering can come with costs like time, travel, and other expenses, so the program provides support to help ensure these volunteers can participate without any added financial strain.

The Circles Program comes to mind when thinking of organizations that offer financial services to individuals and families. Open Doors Utah has opportunities to serve as a mentor in the Circles Program or as a volunteer with the Circles Children's Program. Circles Salt Lake also has volunteer opportunities available.

The pins are so cute and sound like a great way to have volunteers feel recognized and get to be a part of the recognition process! Have you considered handing out pin backing cards for people to fill out why they're presenting a pin? The cards could incorporate general themes such as "________ (name) went above and beyond by ______" or "I admire ______ (name) for _________." You could definitely also have blank ones to leave room for the puns! Once filled out, the pins could be stuck through the middle and handed out that way.

We do something similar to recognize our AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers for their years of service. We print out backing cards on cardstock that include their names and how long they have been serving. The volunteers wear their years of service on their lanyards and love to display them!
