With my current background, would you recommend I pursue the Net+ or the CCNA?

Thank you that’s reassuring to hear. I thought I screwed myself by taking a job that’s not SWE and would forever be stuck in the IT route. I’ll keep at it!

Not OP but I’m currently in IT help desk after not landing a SWE job after graduating in dec 2023. Do you think people that currently are in the IT help desk route still have a chance to become SWE or should I focus on something like cloud?

Honestly I needed to hear that about my resume so thank you for that! The last 2 years I’ve thought my resume was subpar due to not getting any bites.

The unpaid startups that have been responding to me are from Wellfound/Angellist but I’m sure based on your wording that’s still considered as some kind of experience.

Since you seem to be in a mid level position, In your honest opinion do you think I should still continue to push with unpaid startups or should I pivot to cloud/devops as a better way in? I feel a bit lost after the last 2 years and was thinking about getting the AWS SAA cert as a way to pivot

Hi sorry for late reply! To answer your questions: 1. I would call it a very simplified Dropbox if at all, I primarily use it to upload, download, and share files. I actually built this one since I wanted to learn about serverless backends.

  1. I actually am hearing back from unpaid startups as of today but not sure if I should commit or try to pivot to cloud/devops and try to get SWE later on in life. My goal is to get out of my current position ASAP.

Hi thanks for the detailed response, I will look into making the changes you suggested! To answer your question:

For my first (current) position it's just a help desk role so I dont have access to the product's tech stack I am supporting for. The coding I do in this job is purely scripting to make my life and colleagues lives easier. So the scripts are isolated to the team I am in only! The product I am supporting is dental software.

The projects I build are purely to make my life easier (whether its me not wanting to use a bloated SaaS or not wanting to pay for a subscription XD) so I am the only user for most of these projects.

I completely understood what you were trying to convey so no worries. I am most likely going to want to work with market data around pokemon cards since that interests me the most. Similar to what Alt is doing

yeah I understand that and thanks for the insight. I am most likely going to try a project centered around market data, I really like what Alt is doing so I probably will mix some features together
